An axe/hatchet/hawk for junior ???
on: May 24, 2014, 10:06:11 PM
I'm after a axe for my boy, but I haven't really seen anything suitable :/

What I want is a fairly small and light head with a pretty long haft to keep the sharp bit away from his soft bits lol :)

A GB Outdoor axe would be fine but to pricey at the moment :(

Thanks in advance :)

Are the wetterlings any cheaper in your area?  WHen I was shopping last they were 25% or so less than a GB.

I suppose it also depends on whether you want him to have a quality axe to keep for along time, or will he be chopping rocks... :D  I tend to go either extreme of the scale.  Dirt cheap and abuse and not worry about, or higher end and take care of.

I'd vote cheep and abuse in this case.

You can still buy axes off of eBay, right? Maybe some smaller old head you both can make a weekend project out of restoring it, maybe even making the shaft, sharpening it and teaching him how to use it properly. Should be fun for the both of you. :salute:

And if you take progress pics, it would be fun for us too. ;)

Hi Mike.
Would the one on the left be suitable for him Mate?
I can measure it for you tomorrow if you like  :tu:

Could a tomahawk type axe be something to consider? They have light heads and long shafts. The cold steel ones are very affordable but probably not of the greatest quality.

Or a better quality hatchet like the wetterlings wilderness. Its a bit expensive to chop rocks with thoug. And does not have very long shaft, but it had a light head. Heres a pic of mine.

Thanks for the tips guys :) I tend to go quality if I can, but I think he's likely to abuse it by making mistakes :/ I'm actually thinking maybe one of the Gerber Sport Axes as there pretty tough and it won't matter if he misses the work to much and being 11 he's not going to be strong enough to fracture the haft I reckon ???

That does look good Tony, and about the right size :)

Maybe a tomahawk might be best after all, as being lighter its less likely to "get away" from him ???

Isn't the Husqvarna line of axes and hatchets made by Wetterlings? Last time I looked at the local shop (a few years ago) there was a Husq with Wetterlings stamp on the head and considerably cheaper than the Wetterlings sitting next to it.
