Coleman 425F Camping Stove 1980
on: June 01, 2014, 10:51:36 PM
I've been wanting to pick up a car camping stove and the 425 more or less is pretty bullet prof.  I wanted an older one but this came up and for the price I couldn't say no.  It's in good shape and the fuel tank is solid ( held pressure, no leaks).  I'll give it a good cleaning and it'll be ready for some adventures.

Anyone into these stoves?

Picked up another vintage stove  :D  Coleman 425B 1954-1956 I beleive based on some research.  I haven't tested it just yet as the tank needs some cleaning big time.

Back when you was young and lived out in the middle of nowhere the Coleman was my only cooking stove. It served me well.

White gas is best IMO tho petrol was probably also used in these older ones.  The problem I see is the generator gumming up over time since the white gas is cleaner burning.  I'll be using only white gas in the oldies.

I love Coleman stoves!

I have a newer propane two burner version but I've had my eye on my father's old one for years. I have no idea how old his is but I'd say late 70's if I had to guess. He still uses it today.

Always wanted one of those but new one is like $120 now. Saw a few in yardsales, but I don't know enough about them to test/refurbish.

As for the generator, isn't it just a straight tube, so you can wash out any gum with brake cleaner?

My father had one from the late '70s...wish I had it. The stove and lantern were given to some cousins and I have no ideal what happened to them.

I've been thinking about getting one just to have an excuse to buy the folding oven....

What exactly is "white gas"?  It's not kerosene, not gasoline, not butane.  What is it? ???

Its a low octane petroleum distillate.  Anyone heard of "drip gas"?  It's petroleum based but without the additives.  I guess I should have better said I use coleman fuel which states its white gas.

I have always thought of naptha and white gas as one in the same as I only use Coleman fuel for these stoves.  I know there are some dual fuel stoves but those seem to be quite dirty as a result.  These old stoves look like they were run on mainly Coleman fuel but the last one I got the fuel tank has lacquered up so my guess is gasoline was used.

I went a head and got another stove, this time the 413D cir 1950-1953.  I date it as such based on the model 413E being released 1954 and the round gold tank.

I'd like to round out my collection with the original 425, the 425C with red legs, the 520, and the 530 GI Stove.
The 413D I got fired right up and burned a bit much but some cleaning and it should be good to go but I'll take it a bit further and do a full out cleaning and restoration.  The lid was burnt pretty good probably due to this unit not being maintained.  I love the tank shape and that it's another oldie.  This one is bigger that the 425 series in terms of length 22 inch vs 17 inch , width 13 inch vs 11 inch and a bit taller 5 inch vs 4 1/2 inch
( approx ).  Basically it comes down to real estate and what size pots and pans will fit.

Now lets do some cooking!!!!!  Btw I also have been getting some great old cast iron pans as well.

I was minding my business happy at the fleamarket after finding a BO Mr Pinchy and a Lansky Sharpening System when I saw one of the stoves I have been looking for  :ahhh

425C with the red legs and simple decal, which is in great condition btw.  I haven't fired this baby up but I will pressure test the tank then have a go at it.  As with each stove I need to first clean out a few parts and make sure I use clean fuel.  I am so happy I ran into this gorgeous stove, $13 was money well spent IMO.   It's in very good condition but I will restore it as close to new as I'm able.

Like anything old some sellers use the word Vintage and expect top dollar.  I have 4 stoves now and the most I paid was $20, the least was $11.  To me they aren't worth much more than $30, that is if you really really wanted a certain model and it was in great condition.  Some of the much older ones may be higher priced but I wouldn't pay any high price.

Part of my attraction to them is the simple old technology and the fact these old stoves work great 50 years later.  I enjoy tinkering with them to get them up and running.

Been a while since I got a "stove" or anything new on these old stoves.  I haven't been able to resolve a few issues with the older tanks but I fired each one up and they all run great.

I still need to do some cleaning but thats the easy part.  I will be ordering a few parts to get the older tanks going but for now I'm very happy each works as it should.

Here is my family of stoves.  I may get one more but I think for now I'm pretty content.
