Kirk needs a new mobile phone!
on: June 11, 2014, 09:21:18 PM
Oh dear. I think it's finally time to replace my mobile

Here's the thing. As TaxiDad will tell you,I'm not much of a mobile phone type of person. I text far more than voice call, and work on pay as go,contracts are not an option. I use phones til they break, and expect them to last three to four years.

So here's the rub. Should I go back to the classic Nokia 3310,albeit reconditioned? I do like the very basic cheapie Nokias,or should I take a leap into the naughties, and have a look at a low end smart phone?

Ladies and gents, your votes and opinions please!

With what you said I'd go for cheap NOKIA. They are durable, battery last as long as you remember, and they have good build quality...

I wouldn't go back in ancient history with 3310. If you want to go there then take 1100.

While you text a lot maybe to consider qwerty option i.e. E71 or E72... older models, but nice metal body and also built like tanks. Had one, loved it!

Don't go cheap android, or any other smart phone for low $$... You'll just get pissed off at one point and throw it in the wall...  :D :D

I had my portion of phones, low scale and upper scale (never premium though). After few androids, last of which was NEXUS 4 i jumped on iPhone 4s. I believe you can get one of those rather cheap  IMHO great phone...

Now back on NOKIA. IMHO you can get some of ASHA models w/qwerty and they also have some apps for net.

Overall my vote goes to cheap NOKIA... They're built to last...

I love smart phones because they can have apps that simplify your life

check this out as just one example

it is a handy man app, with calculators for nearly anything you could think of

If I can help, let me know

They should have a phone that you'd like. Both old-school phones and newer Android-phones. Didn't check the UK-price, but the cheapest model they have, is just a tad more expensive than a decent Nokia here in Denmark.

Nokia, IMHO, has always made great phones.  My current phone is a Nokia Lumia 1020, and aside from some apps not being up to par with the Android/Apple equivalent (they are slowly getting there), it's a great solid phone.  Now, the 1020 is far from their basic phones, but the quality still trickles down.

I agree that a cheap Android phone will probably end up driving you batty.  They'll most likely be slow, and choppy.  iPhones are also great phones, and you should be able to find a 4s for fairly cheap.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far!

On the basis of what folks are saying, those arn't the Droids I'm looking for

Tbh,what I've seen of iPhones hasn't impressed me. They seem to be good at lots of stuff, but not being phones....

It's coming down to the idiot proof Nokias I think

Take another look at the Moto G. Its packs far more performance than its price suggests.

For sure,but it's about £90-100 over budget!

For fun,here's the current encumbrant

Just some out of box thinking, I have seen locals waved about this, many have said it was a cross between iphone and andriod.

Redmi

http://www.mi.com/en/redmi

Quad-core 1.5GHz
MTK MT6589T
Virtual QWERTY keyboard
InputTouch
SystemMIUI V5, based on Android 4.2.
CallDual microphone noise reduction

RAM 1GB
Flash Memory ROM 4GB
Max storage expansion 32GB

Display  4.7 inch IPS display
Resolution  1280x720

I don't think it is comparable to Brand names quality, but at that price, it's really hard to beat.
Btw, really love the pictures of your current phone, very seasonal with stories to tell.  I will keep it after it has decommissioned if I were you.  :tu:

Not that I want to throw your search off but I hate my Nokia Lumia 820.
I've broken 2 I'm on #3 now. 1 had a memory problems the other broke because I had it and a lighter in the same pocket.

I'm going back to blackberry as soon as I can get a new phone.

my Nokia takes good pics but sucks at pretty much everything else.
I won't get a Nokia again.

good luck with the search kirky

Nokia came out recently-ish with the 105, has basically no functions, supposed to have a great battery time, and of course, the good old Nokia simplicity. If it's available on that side of the pond, I'd say try it ;) (also, it's supposed to be like 15/20 quid or something)

I'd been looking at that one, too, before getting a smartphone :P I like the fact that it has a flashlight built-in, might be a nice backup ;) Of course they never specify how bright it is...

Oh, also...

DON'T get a cheap smartphone... In my (little) experience, the small ones cheapen out on stuff like the touchscreen, which makes typing anything a living hell... With my first (borrowed) smartphone (Samsung Galaxy Y) I really had to hold back, make sure I -would not- throw it away against a wall, any time I had to type a message longer than 10 characters...

So, don't ;)

Just my humble opinion of course

Like bmot said, and I'll repeat myself and him again... Don't go cheap smartphones.. They'll make living hell out of your experience...

Had the chance to have forementioned Samsung Y, and as company supplied phone now it's Samsung Galaxy Trend...

Man they are smurfing smurf!!

I also had midrange android... And higher range (mentioned NEXUS 4 which is stock Google)... Meh... They drain battery faster than you can say "multi"... Yes they have app's and fun stuff... But I ended up texting, and calling...

Blackberries    AFAIK they gone down... At least that's the word here... We had BB's as company provided and they do have some good stuff... But IDK... Form and function is like Nokia E71 but with way lower quality...

I'd say old school Nokia or similar. Don't go into that "if you ever want to do this, this phone can do it." Make a list of what you NEED your phone to do and stick to it.

I've been thinking about getting a "cheap" dual sim phone. I started with a €100+/- and after a little while I was looking at €250+/-!

 :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

I really don't need all the stuff in a 4,5" screen smartphone with quadcore and 2 cameras. I'm getting back to basics, I only use a mobile for calls and sms (mms very rarely), calendar and alarms. Nokia has some Asha models that do that and even more.

A bit dearer but bomb proof are the Samsung 2100 and 2700 tough phones. Waterproof and I loved my 2700 so much I bought a second one in case it died! Best phone ever IMO :)

The only reason I don't use it all the time is that my flat hasn't got the internet yet, so need to use my phone for browsing ect :)
