Canoe trip
on: June 12, 2014, 07:22:11 PM
I went on a 3 day canoe trip with my brother and father two weeks ago. My father used to kayak a lot when I was younger, but he stopped after a shoulder injury about ten years ago. His shoulder has been better for several years, so me and my brother decided to take him on a three day trip.
We chose a lake my father had visited many years before. As it turned out the lake had changed a lot since then. The water level was so low now that what once was one lake, was now two smaller lakes connected by a tiny shallow waterfall. As a result we had to unpack the canoe and carry the canoe an kayak over into the next lake, wich was actually quite fun.
We had great weather and spent most of the time paddling around the lakes fishing and relaxing.
On our way back we got another surpise. The water level was still sinking, and we suddenly had very shallow water. We actually had to stake our way through a 100m long shallows, leaving a long canoe shaped skid mark in the mud behind us. :D
Here are some pics. ( sorry about the poor quality)

The tools carried on the trip. Fallkniven F1 and LM Rebar

Beautiful pix and nothing beats taking your Dad out to his favorite hangout for an early Father's Day outing.  :tu:  Any pictures for the waterfall connecting the two lakes?

And how does the Fallkniven F1 and LM Rebar hold up in the trip?  Are they stored in water tight container while paddling?

Thanks. My dad really enjoyed it, and so did we.
Sorry, no pic of the waterfall. The phone was packed away in a plastic bag.
The tools worked great. I have had them both with me on many trips before. The Fallkniven is an exceptipnally good knife.
I carried them both on my belt the whole time.

Besides to low water level it is a beautiful setting.  Very nice to spend time with your family.

I have to ask- what kind of kayak is that?  It is a beautiful boat- looks to be about 15 feet?

That is my fathers old kayak. It is a Norwegian made Hasle Explorer. Its 17 feet long.
I might actually get to borrow a similar one for some time, if everything goes as planned. :)

Breathtaking scenery my friend ...

That's my idea of heaven, a kayak, a beautiful scenery, great company ... what more could a guy want ?

P.S. With the Fallkniven F1 and LM Rebar on your side, there's not much that could come your way that you couldn't handle, great choice of tools for such a trip  :tu:.

It does sound like it would be fun, but I don't know if my fear of small boats would make me too  :ahhh to enjoy it.  For me, I think the worst thought with being in a kayak is rolling over.  Freaks me right out!!!

That's a misconception.  If you roll over in a kayak you fall out.  The only way you stay in is if you WANT to stay in it.  :D

I finally did it!
Yesterday I bought myself a kayak :D
I have been searchibg the web for a decent used boat at a reasonable price for some time,  but it was hard to find something decent that did not cost too much. Then I discovered that my uncle had a 15 year old Hasle Explorer almost Identical to my fathers that he has hardly used. As it turned out he was happy to get rid of it, and sold it too me at a very nice price.
I picked it up yesterday and cant wait til I get the time to try it out. :ahhh:

That is a beautiful boat!  Congratulations!

I just looked up the specs on that boat and they seem pretty impressive- only a couple of kilos heavier than my 17 foot fiberglass boat.

I can't wait to see some adventure pics from when you take it out!
