When cleaning up a few knives for a friend this weekend, i put a piece of clear tape over the blade edge. It really helped with the accidents. Any tape residue came off easily. I wait till the end to sharpen the Blades. Gun oil, sharp metal and fingers. I need all the help i can get. Hope it can help some one else.

I am always very cautious with my knifes. I have had a couple of close calls with some folding knifes when i was playing around opening and closing them. I only had one deep cut once. It was with my skeletool CX. I was holding a cable and and tried to cut the isolation material of it. I was in a hurry

and made the classic mistake of slicing toward a body part

cut in the skin besides my thumb nail, it was about 3 mm deep

At work, I use cut proof gloves that are level 3 and don't really impede my hands. That being said, I've only cut myself once at work, when we used a level 1 glove and I trusted it to stop a work razor. Took most of my knuckle off; I just pushed the flap back down and sealed it with superglue. Can't even see it now. I find that the gloves aren't necessary, just a precaution for people that do not practice controlled cutting.

Rushing will cause you to cut yourself. Cutting at an uncomfortable or unfamiliar angle will end up biting you. Controlling your cuts by angling them away from you AND bracing the hand doing the cutting or the back of the blade, will ensure that you don't slip. Most of my push through cuts go forward, away from my hand, with my thumbs on the back of the blade locked together, the item I'm cutting in one hand, and the knife in the other. As I cut, instead of pushing, I squeeze the object being cut against the blade to start, then slide the blade in whatever direction I need. I have cut myself once in about...15 years or so. Controlling the cut in whatever way works for you is foolproof. Respect your blade, but never trust it to respect you.

I agree, when analyzing all my mistakes with tools and that the one time i drove backwards into a parked car i can see that all those accidents when i was in a rush and wanted to (or had to do) the things quickly.

But I have to post this.
I've been playing with sharp things all my life. Blades, power tools, you know.
Usually I cut myself once a month or so. Accidents happen all the time, nothing serious ever. I have pretty dangerous toys also, like Recon 1 XL, and man that knife is scary. I use it for wood work and its good at that. I'm so lucky that I havent cut myself with it.
Aanyways.... today I received really bad cut to my hand, but not with Recon 1, no. I cut away the tip of my pinky with my BENCHMADE 940! I have never respected that tiny knife and it has felt really safe to use... Ahaha! I don't know if I should laugh or cry. This cut will take like weeks to heal, and in my line of work will make many difficult situations... DAMN Benchmade... how could you do this to me!? So ashamed now... Now excuse me. Have to change bandages and plan protecting my hand before shower...

I have heard SAKs are some of the knives that bite the most people at knife shows. People open multiple tools and don't respect the small blades, and voila...

So far the only time I've been bitten by my SAKs was my Alox Farmer, after that I have learned to respect the sharp blade and the strong backspring. Now I always close the blade very carefully.
