I today cut myself with paper... Again! but gladly it didn't start bleeding, just the first skin layer got scratched.

What kind of paper you use? Locking, non-locking? One-hand folding? Assisted writing?...

Mechanical folded, 90g/m2, white, DIN A2 or higher.

I got some Colt knives a few days ago. Right now, I'm carrying a Colt Canoe in my pocket. I had to, we became blood brothers the day I bought it (pinky vs small blade). Just a nick, but it meant a lot!

I cannot cut as well or as skillfully as the guy in that video, and do not mean to tell him his business. But it looks to me as though the protective glove teaches bad habits. I winced as he cut fast through the melon directly towards the hand supporting it.

I'm pretty good with a knife and speed comes with experience.  I'd certainly not recommend this technique for cutting,  the glove was used in this demonstration I'd imagine was to "assist" in the speed.  Having worked in production kitchens I can tell you even the experienced get cut.  I've not seen many in my time wear that glove other than butchers.  I'd imagine it's mostly used as a layer of safety rather than like in this video for speed demonstration.

This is a cut I received from my Freestyle CX when trying to open a pack of frozen fish food which had been wrapped in newspaper and bound nice and tight  with buff tape. I was cutting away from myself but my left hand got in the way

The Doc was highly amused when I took a photo before I washed the blood off my hand.

I think the experienced may get cut more. Experience leads to skill and confidence, then complacency. Also the process of gaining experience, by definition, means you do a lot of an activity thus providing more opportunities for Murphy.

If I'm not mistaken, he was bringing the blade through the melon towards his palm, and drawing it across, or nearly across, his gloved left hand. Maybe that's a correct or professional way to do it, but I was always taught never to cut towards my digits or body parts, always away. But the guy who taught me that - my grandfather - regularly whittled, and routinely mad whittling cuts wherein he squeezed the blade towards the thumb of his knife hand.

I embarrassed myself by trying to cut a zip tie with a small exacto blade, and somehow plunged the blade deep into my thumb. Had nail clippers in my pocket that would have worked better.

Rethinking my EDC - I usually carry multitool plus folding knife, but maybe multitool plus good scissors would be more practical.

Or, maybe if someone replaced the plier head on a Leatherman freestyle or SOG Powerduo with utility shears.

Micra. Seriously. Or, really, any scissor-based keychain LM tool. They can all cut zip-ties with the tips of their scissors (important, in my opinion, for cutting wire bundles that are so tight you can't slip a blade under the binding zip tie).

I've carried various kinds of scissors, but my practical need has never exceeded the ability of my SOG Crosscut, or Leatherman Micra. Since it's hard to find regular old scissors that are much lighter than those tools, might as well get the benefit of the extra tools. My opinion.

Also, there are a number of tasks where scissors decrease the chance of cutting yourself compared to a blade, and I'm a big proponent of scissors. But there are also a lot of tasks where a blade is not just better, but necessary. And in those circumstances, I guess I'm never going to completely get away from cutting myself.

Not as awesomely as mrmustard, though. :D

Fear is as dangerous as a lack of respect for the tool, and both cut just as deep.

Agreed. Since the incident I have learnt to be much more careful and I still bought more like 10 more Leatherman's thereafter. Haven't cut myself not once since(Touch Wood) but I do not fear the tool at all but I respect it's ability to get the job done as well as the fact that I may lose an appendage if I am not careful.  The best lesson in life is most times learnt the hard way.

Thanks for the compliment Lynn  but seriously I hope nobody ever has to learn a lesson that way.

Nope, that is the bathroom at the Doc's office in the local clinic.  It would have been really cool if I could do it though ;) but my bathroom would have been full of blood.

You would have been surprised at how much blood came out of that cut, from what the doc said I might have hit the artery in my finger. They don't call it 154CM Steel for nothing and thank goodness it was plain edge and not serrated so it was a nice clean cut, I shudder to think what could have been
if I had not bought the CX version.

Took about 1 month before I could start moving my finger again but it has healed up so well, all you can see is a thin line which is barely noticeable.

Ahhh... man...

You could have at least SAID you did it.

"Yeah, took a shot of whiskey, and stitched my finger together with bank line using the awl on a swiss army knife."  :D

In any case, hope it heals well. :salute:

Agreed.

But I've seen attempted at self applied stitches. It reminds me of my late grandmother's quilting. After adding rasberry brandy to her tea.

Did you cut only in the upper layers of skin or right into the flesh?

Yep, I cut myself again. It's a teeny tiny scratch, but there's blood, so.. does that count. It's a whole new experience to cut yourself with a gold-platd SAK

Im a machinist, i cut myself weekly, sometimes daily.  I just get used to having a bandaid on.  My multis rarely get me though, i am usually extra careful with them after being bitten so many times in the past.
