Added a sheepsfoot blade, made from a pruner.

Love the reprofiled pruner :tu: Great tool configuration too.

I have two questions: wouldn't a pair of scissors be preferable to a file? I like the newer Vic metal file a lot, it's plenty useful, still I think I'd pick scissors instead. Would that make the SAK too thick?

My other question is, how well does the can opener work as such in that position?

Overall I feel I can honestly say :gimme:
Omnia vincit amor. Vae victis.

Thanks!  I built this one to be carried with a Leatherman Style PS (which covers the scissors and has nice little pliers) and I find a full size file more useful than large scissors.  Replacing the file with the scissors would only add around 1mm to the thickness of the knife, so not much more.  I haven't tried the can opener yet - the chopped tomatoes I used for dinner last night had a ring-pull. :ahhh

Thanks!  Thankfully the tips I got here helped preserve those scales better than my last attempts.

Nice, those rivet heads look awesome!

Thanks!  I don't have a drill press (yet), so I can't bore the holes for those 1/8" pivots, so I'm stuck peening.  It does seem to get a bit easier each time though.

Bit of a necro-post, but do you have a Dremel?  The carbide tile cutter bit (#562) is 1/8" in diameter and works well for drilling out stainless tools.

My much-modded Pioneer gets another tweak:
Added a sheepsfoot blade, made from a pruner.

Nice one H
Sheepsfoot blades are great - It's very handy having that straight flat cutting edge - and a brilliant idea to mod a pruner.

I really don't know why Vic dont make their second blade a sheepsfoot - or even a nail file like Wenger - Two drop points always seems like a duplication to me.

I am just full of admiration for you modders - This is my favourite board in the forum, and thanks for all your posts. Inspirational stuff!!  :D
I will get into doing my own soon :D I have plans !! Although very modest compared to you guys.

One wee question though - Does the sheepsfoot close correctly and not catch on the opener? As normally it would close on the other side of its partner main blade

Thanks for the tip!  My dad has a dremel that I borrow from time to time.  If I order that bit, he may not get it back for a while :)

You really should. :pok:

This one is from a Pioneer Harvester where it takes the place of the can opener so sits perfectly with the cap lifter.  It's bent the other way to the small blade on a 91mm knife.

^^ Aha - Perfect - Thanks

This raises an interesting point:
The only pruner blade I have is on an old Outdoorsman, where it is paired with the main blade, and so 'bends' to the left, as you look down from above - whereas the Harvester pruner bends to the right then??
So it looks like Vic must make (or did make) pruner blades that bend both ways.
Is that right? Or am I confusing myself ??? !!

Judging by the small blade on my alox Pruner that sits on the same spot as the small blade found on 91mm SAKs I'd say it could also be used in lieu of the can opener in its standard position. No idea if that would take a special backspring though.

I believe the file to be of the same size as the wood saw. That said, I know this may sound weird but I can't help thinking my Camper feels much more compact and tight than a Climber, way more pocket friendly or so it seems to me it seems   :ahhh

I know weight difference is negligeable as well, however I get the impression that scissors don't really do it for me on alox. Maybe SAK pliers are the ticket. I don't know anymore.

The pruner blade from the Harvester has a definite bend away from the scale so it fits nicely next to the cap lifter - I think it must be different to the other pruner blade.

Yup its the same part, but the pruner blade on a pruner is straight, and the pruner blade on a harvester has a bend to it.   Ive used them interchangeably though as they are easy to bend.

How does that feel in hand? Looks like it wouldn't be very comfortable along the edges?

don't know.  It goes in the usb or dangles from keys.  The holes are so small they dont come into play.  I can see what you are saying and perhaps if the holes were larger.
