Hello, this is my first time posting anything on these forums but I thought I would share my latest creation.  I made some 93mm aluminum scales with the grid pattern of the model 61 soldier knife.  I added of course a few differences to the shield.  ;)  The anodizing didn't turn out the way I hoped but maybe next time.. Hardened pivots, turned screw faces, phosphor bronze thrust bearings.  I was just happy to get all the digitizing and alignment of holes correct for this first round. Now off to tinker with it some more!  :D

That's excellent! Care to share some of your processes? Did you CNC the scales? How did you digitise them - 3d scanner?

Yes! I used a CNC Mill to probe the profile; however, I didn't go solely off the data from the machine.  Since this knife is very symmetrical, I made sure the points were turned into clean arcs perfectly symmetrical in CAD and not splines which is what your getting essentially from the machine.  The hole spacing is on metric numbers, no big surprise, that was easy to transfer over to imperial.  Everything took a little bit of fiddling with in CAD, not too bad.

Right now Im messing with the grid pattern a bit and different designs on the face.  The scales are pocketed on the other side as well but to be honest there isn't that much weight to these to begin with..Hah  Only will that come in to play when I start the titanium versions.  I still need to get the "alox" versions down first.

 :tu:  Good stuff.

What are the dimensions of the grid pattern?  I figured out a pretty close approximation by trial and error a while back - would be interested to see what you measured it to be.

Got any photos of the milling on the inside of the scales?

The pattern is 1.5 mm x 1.5 mm.  The soldier pattern is offset differently than the civilian "pioneer" version with the Vic shield.

I'll post some more photos of the scales. Maybe I'll start a separate thread for it..

Thanks! It turned out well and I think it's the perfect tool set for me.

To be honest it started out as a pain. When I drilled out the pins the bit walked and made it hard to finish drilling them without damaging the bushings. But a dremel and a steady hand remedied that.
Then as I was removing the layers one of the liners wouldn't budge and I ended up severly bending it ; luckily i had a spare from the donor.

Eventually it all worked out, and the razor blade between the liners trick kept me from over peening this time
Now to find some nice looking scales!

I Had an Aloxplorer made for me by Syph last year, but unfortunately I would never carry it. Now, looking at the Pioneer X, I don't really care for the "wrong" nail nick position. Long story short, wanting a Pioneer X, but with the "proper" nail nick, I removed the mag/Phillips layer from the Aloxplorer and, after shortening the pivots and the screws, put everything back together, Loctite and all. (cross-posted, because I'm so happy with the result)
