This is what it looked like when I bought it:

Why do I need one...

Well Tony it's on your credit!!  :pok: :pok: :D :D :D

So I removed the old handle and bought it a new one, let the head soak for 24 hours in gun oil, used a steel brush and steel wool and a lot of elbow grease.
Putting the new handle on was a real smurf job. It was way too tight and after 40 minutes of hammering it in I had to cheat a little. I heated the head gently with a gas burner and finally managed to hammer the handle all the way through. I now have blisters on both hands but Im quite happy with the result.

Im afraid you might be right.   I have absolutely no need for more axes, but it was sooo satisfying to fix up that old thing and give it a second life, it probably wont be the last one.

I bought it at a skandinavian hardware chain called "Jula"

Just an update. I used the axe all weekend chopping firewood for our fires at the market. It worked like a charm, and held its edge nicely.  Ive got to admit that its almost as good as my granfors bruks forresters axe. Øyo ,the maker of the axe head, really knew how to make axes when they made this one. Sadly that is a skill they seem to have forgotten. Im not very impressed by their current axes :(
