Need Help! Brothers Birthday SAK...
on: June 24, 2014, 11:51:11 AM
So my brothers birthday is coming up in August and I wanna get him his first real SAK, he had a knock off SAK for a while till his nephew lost it for him.
He really likes the Victorinox Fisherman I showed him a while back (he commented on how cool the fish scaler is). So I was thinking of getting him one.

But he drinks wine and the Fisherman doesn't have the Cork Screw... So I was thinking a Huntsman would be better. It has the Wood Saw instead of the Fish Scaler/ Ruler.

I want it to be a surprise so I don't wanna ask him what he would prefer, might seem a bit sus.

What would you recommend?
Fisherman, Huntsman or something else?

I am never a big fan of the fish scaler, so I would recommend something that's without:

Spartan: basic and useful for urban setting, with corkscrew for his wine and small sunglasses screwdriver
Tourist: same as Spartan, just a little smaller and often comes with picture of the city.
Climber: Spartan + scissors + few back tools.  I often think 91mm SAK scissors is the best in industry.
Hustman: even better, Climber + saw

Totally Agree!

How about the Angler? Fish scaler and Corkscrew!

You're a good brother. :salute:

I was thinking the Angler but no scissors, IMO scissors are a must!

What about a mod??

The fish scaler is not the most popular tool round here - So there may well be a few spares around - Grab one -
Then pop the scaler on a Huntsman - perfect!!

Our fellow Aussie PRTSAK is a pretty prolific and capable modder - He might be able to do it for you if you did not fancy a go yourself  :D

Likewise the corkscrew is not so popular - You could just put a cs on a Fisherman - Then you get the cool fish logo - which I think is just great!!

Actually I would have a go at either of those for you if you like and supply the donors/parts!!
I am not an experienced modder (ooh err) But follow the threads, have read up a bit, have pulled apart a couple of SAKS and re-assembled, and have the tools and parts!

I'm pretty sure you could scale a fish with the spine of the saw, couldn't you?

I don't really eat all that much fish, though.

If there needs to be a fish scaler( where's Lynn?) and a corkscrew, then yes, money allowing,it's either a SwissChamp or a Champion Plus!

I keep looking at a Fisherman,but I don't think I need a delicates olive/chip fork

IMO the Huntsman is a hard SAK to beat. It offers a great toolset with the scissors and saw but it's not to big and clunky to use and carry comfortably. For an added bonus you could get him my current personal favorite, a Huntsman plus.  :tu:

I never thought of a mod...

I think I'll go with a Huntsman and add a Fish Scaler/ Ruler. (Or Fisherman with Wood Saw and CS as the Fisherman scales are pretty cool) Will be my first mod so hopefully I don't F it up!

I see three options:
  • Swisschamp
  • Swisschamp
  • mod a Huntsman and add scaler, pliers, metal file, Philips and maglens

Well I think 'Option 4' will offer a much more flexible and practical toolset:

4. Mod a Fisherman - Remove: Backspring Phillpps; Add woodsaw, pliers, metal file, in line Philips / maglens, corkscrew

Wow nice price Gareth - Unfortnately I think amazon.com does not ship to Oz
I have tried it a couple of times without success

But the Champion Plus is not a bad solution to the birthday requirement.
It keeps the sak a bit slimmer than the Champ
- But still pretty thick for EDC - But maybe OK for the fishing/picnic bag.

Not a pro fisherman here (I can't kil the fishies.. they remind me too much of my aquarium back home), but I'd think the pliers would be very usefull for pulling hooks out .

I want it to be comfortable in jeans pockets so I think anything over 4-5 layers might be pushing it. I want my brother to actually use this SAK and not stick it in a drawer and forget about it...

Pliers would be good indeed but I think scissors are more useful for day to day stuff, encouraging pocket EDC.

My suggestion would be Angler+Classic SD combo. Classic SD has scissors and can be put on keys and worn absolutely everyday. Angler can comfortably be worn in a pocket.

A little change in perspective?
What about a Wenger Fisherman 19?

This is basically the old european model 1.19.25, known as Fly Fisherman (with a different imprint) in North America.
I'm not mentioning the model 1.19.13 (also known as Sailfish), which replaces the flat phillips driver with a small blade, because it will be too difficult to find.

Hi there,
IMHO if this would be his first (and maybe only) SAK,, then it surely can't be too large. To me, the lighter the better, if you want him to carry it with himself on a daily basis.

You said he liked the fish scaler, but does he fish at all? And does he need a fish scaler? (I've been going fishing when I was a child, and I have never used or owned a scaler myself, I'm not sure if it's actually used by fishermen...).

That being said, a scissor would also be useful at fishing time (for cutting lines, you know...), and they can be handy in other occasions too. So, I'd go with a Climber: not too bulky, has scissors, has corkscrew, has blades, it isn't too much heavy (I've used to own one, until I lost it...). This would be my first choice, it also comes in a variety of colours.

If you want it to be even lighter you can go with a Compact (these days a can opener isn't really useful anymore, and you can live without second blade. You'd lose the awl too, pity).

If you really want a fish scaler, the Angler seems to be the smaller one to include it and although it doesn't have scissors, the pliers can be quite handy while fishing (and not to pull out the hook, that's the role of that small "dent" at the end of the scaler, rather you'd close the plombs with them - a job usually done with teeth...). It's a 4 layers, though.

So it's down to weather he'd really use it for fishing or not. In the end if you use the tool for scaling a fish, you wouldn't bring it in your sute pocket at work the day after that, would you? :)

just my 2 cents.

It's been a few decades for me, but I think we scraped scales with the edge of the knife, held with the spine straight up? Anyhow, I can't wanting the stench and mess of having USED the scaler, then folding back into place of my knife. YUCK.

That said, I can't see going anymore than a 3-layer for his first Sak, otherwise, he may find it too bulky to carry.

Like the change in perspective - Why do we always automatically always think Vic

Just so long as he's ok with those hideous serrated scissors.
Not hideous at all - They're fine  :D :D - Used mine today a couple of times (lovely Evowod 13) - No problem at all.
Although as much as I love Wengers - I prefer the Vic scissors.

This is a good point, maybe a Climber would be a better option... :D
