on: July 01, 2014, 07:14:47 AM
Hey guys, just wanted to find out from you what items most of you consider to be essential to keep in your vehicle for those just in case situations?

The things I like to keep in my car are as follows.

- Tools (Wrenches, Sockets, Screwdrivers, and a Multitool)
- Jumper Cables
- A extra change of clothes
- A blanket
- Rope
- Zip Ties
- Duct Tape
- 2 bottles of water (for emergencies or to use in your radiator if needed)

Flashlight and gloves can be handy. Packet of fuses and a couple spare bulbs for the car are good too.

Please do.  :tu:

I forgot to mention a flashlight like Zoidberg said. A flashlight is a very important thing to keep in your car and should be very high up on your list. I choose not to store the batteries in the light but very close by.

zoidberg and captian spaulding, I do normally tend to always have a pocket flashlight on me but a larger more robust model wouldn't hurt in the car and its a good excuse to buy some more gear :D

This is what I have in mine. I worry most in winter time, so my gear is directed towards those cold months.

1. Folding shovel.
2. Scout SOL survival kit with Victorinox 111mm Dual Pro.
3. SOL emergency bivvy shelter.
4. Medium sized first aid kit.
5. Road assist Kit that contains jump cables, fuses, tools, emergency road signs, etc.
6. Socket set.
7. pair of mitts and toque.
8. emergency rations and water. Usually consist of something that is heat resistant such as trail mix and a few bottles of water.
9. A flashlight.

That about sums it up for me.
A little Leatherman information.

This is why I love this place, everyone's needs are so unique and diverse, it's giving me some great ideas for my own kit.

Thanks Chako, our country is nice and warm so luckily I dont have to stress too severely on cold.

Back when I drove I always kept a full size spare, saying that, I kept a tote full of stuff, let's see.
A mini FAK,
Small toolbox,(yes there was a sak in it)
A qt of all fluids, and a large bottle of radiator fluid,
Roll of paper towels,
Jumper cables,
Zip ties,
Duct tape & electrical tape,
Towels
BIG flashlight,
Rope,
Flair,
WD-40, can't forget that!
Few other things that I can't think of, but one unique thing, a sled, one of those cheap foam roll up ones, has two diff sides. Slick side, or foam side Perfect for either snow or dirt, slides around when you have to move, just turn it over. And best of all, a complete relief for the joints or back when having to work on the car! So much better then cardboard! But best of all, cheap, rolls up, and tucks away! JR

I always snatched napkins from any restaurant I went to, same with toothpicks, but yeah, napkins saved my @$$, if I didn't have any that's where the paper towels came in handy, grant it not that comforting, but they could be used in more ways then one! :D  JR

 ok Thanks for the heads up. Won't forget the toilet paper. Just made me think of a funny story of a friend of mine who went on a road trip once and didn't have any on him, from what he told me it did not end pretty but it was hilarious.

Yea, it's definitely worth having a roll in your car. Paper towels would be great like MadPlumbarian said. You can use it as toilet paper if needed, but it has other uses as well.

I have:
Cable ties (nylon and steel)
Multimeter
Jump leads
Ratchet strap
Hi-vis jacket
Water (2*500ml bottles)
Small multi-bit screwdriver set
Leatherman Core
Rain coat
FAK (and I have a FAK ticket)
Hand wipes

I've currently got a sleeping bag in it, but that's mostly out of laziness. I went away without taking one, bought a cheap one and left it in the car for winter. It's summer now.

Of that lot, I've used the cable ties at an MTO meetup, the multimeter loads of times but usually when I'm visiting someone, the jump leads a couple of times but never yet for me (they're very long and heavy and have been used on a mate's tractor), the water is always coming in useful, I used the Core a few times on my old car and the hand wipes are very useful.

I have in the back of my Suburban a 25 gallon Rubbermaid bin which contains:

- Sears Portable Power battery jumper.   Aside from jumping my myself or others, it provides a backup power source for the cell phone and other electronic devices.  Recharged monthly.  Has air compressor.
- a DC to AC power inverter, which lets me run AC devices off of the vehicle cigarette lighter or Sears battery jumper
- military ammo box with tools, fixed blade, WD-40
- large coffee can with lid, containing a roll of toilet paper.   When you have a sick kid in the back seat, you be glad to have a container.  Could also transport gas or water in pinch.
- heavy duty universal lug wrench; those little ones that come with the spare tire provide no leverage
- seasonal backup clothing for teenage boys
- trailer hitch
- comprehensive first aid kit with CPR mask
- small PSK, basically an Adventure Medical Kit's Pocket Survival Pack which I have augmented
- spare umbrella
- Maxpedition Malaga, black.  Contains misc items, and can be emptied and used as required.
- paper towels
- tow strap
- anti-bacterial wipes
- bottled water in ziplock bags

I have been carrying bottled water, stored in a gallon ziplock in case it leaks.  I think I need to lose that, because it will freeze.  Not sure what the alternative is, when the temp is below freezing.

In addition to the contents of the Rubbermaid bin, my Man Sack also rides in the vehicle and is available to take with me when I exit.   It is not so much an EDC bag, but more of a "just in case" bag containing convenience items for the most part.   It consists of a black Maxpedition MPB, which I have chosen because it has a lot of volume, and because it looks like a briefcase and flies below the radar.  No "Sh*t Magnet" velcro patches for me, thanks.  I want law enforcement and security guards to ignore me.   It contains:

- Bible (NIV Study)
- legal pad and file folder
- pens, pencils, Sharpies
- large Moleskine notebook
- Fenix 2AA light
- Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit
- quart ziplock with misc contents: duct tape, phone chargers, earplugs, suncreen, lighter, monocular, spare keys to MIL's car, etc.
- EMT shears
- small first aid kit (scrapes and boo boos only)
- nail clippers, dental floss, chapstick, tums, diphenhydramine
- advil, anti-diarrhea, cough drops, hand sanitizer
- hand lotion
- Tide stain pen
- Countycomm am/fm/shortwave radio (nice)
- spare batteries
- pepper spray
- Anker 5000 mah backup battery (awesome)

Tools, jumper cables, fuses, duct tape, wire, hose clamps, a little Al flashing, shovel, saw, hatchet, tarps, blankets (wool and fleece), clear and black contractor bags, FAK, PSK, poncho. And most importantly, work gloves, boots and spare socks.

Also carry carb bars, water, ramen, dried fruit, a small mess kit, and a small gas stove. And baring that, I've got a swiss volcano stove. Bug dope, sun block. And a change of clothes that includes thermal layer, spare boonie hat and watch cap, and wool gloves. A little cash. Phone book (yellow pages), maps, note pad.

I drive a Honda pilot, live about a half hour outside Los Angeles (to give you an idea of the weather), and commute about fifteen minutes each way to work. During a normal day, the following is in the car:

Small tool kit
Branch saw
Jumper cable
Full sized spare and jack
Flash light
Gloves
Spare belt
Pull over sweater
Wind breaker
Folding chair
Twine
SAK Classic
A belt
Trauma shears
A boo boo kit
Nail clippers
Tweezers
Altoids
My library card
A plug in USB slot for the powered cigarette lighter thing
A couple towels
One or two of my son's projects from daycare
A canvas laundry bag
An errant toy car

Clearly, not all of these are essentials, but they are what's in my car.
