Clay pot stew
on: July 06, 2014, 11:16:56 AM
Im currently partisipating in a Viking market reenaktment open to visitors to see how a market looked like here a 1000 years ago. We are about 700 vikings and had 7000 visitors yesterday, so it is a pretty big arrangement.
I had remwmbered to bring my salted and dried mutton, but forgot my iron pot, so we improvised using a clay pot in stead. We dug a small pit, filled it with hot coal and put the pot in. We let it simmer for aprox 4hours bedore putting vegetables in, and then let it simmer for another hour.
It was real tasty, and the meat became so tender I could rip it apart with a spoon.

A pic of the market from the seaside before opening today.

Thanks. I had a great time.  Not many Viking pics. Vikings snapping pics with their Iphones is frowned upon. Here are the ones I took before and after opening hours.

Oh yeah, I'd have no trouble savoring that.

Pretty neat encampment an re-enactment you have created there.

Just curious, do you know why the prow on the ship is so high like that?

Im just guessing, but I think it is to prevent waves to crash inn over the deck. The Vikings also usually had removable prow figure heads, usually a dragon or serpents head.

Wow! This gathering seems so nice! And food cooked in a clay pot. Been so long since I had a meal done the right old way. Nice pictures Gaute!
