I was so torn about putting Kyrgyzstan as my choice, but since I was there on a deployment and not vacation (okay, it was basically a vacation) I decided not to. But you are right, what an amazing place with so much history and diversity. I absolutely fell in love with Kyrgyzstan and its people while I was there and cannot wait to go back someday. It is such a shame that most people have never even heard of it, but it is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Well, I cheated a little bit too... I was there on a volunteer English teaching team- not quite vacation. I have been back one time since, though even that was technically on some fund-raising business. Both times I took some "vacation" time though. :)

Where were you in Kyrgyzstan? I was in Jalalabad & Osh in the south, though I did make it to Bishkek as well. I was there mostly over the winter, so I unfortunately didn't get to do too much outdoor exploring. :-\

NOT my picture, but I've had my eye on this place for a while now to visit.

Melissani Cave, Greece.

Looks absolutely gorgeous!

EDIT: Honorable mention as we might be making a road trip to this location this year, the Madison Blue Spring State Park. Looks like a nice oasis I can forget about the stresses of life in for a while.

Thanks for the awesome giveaway.

My favorite vacation spot is the North Litchfield and Pawleys Island area of South Carolina.  It is close enough to Myrtle Beach to do all of the touristy stuff, but remote enough for private beaches.  I love to sit under an umbrella on the beach and do nothing but watch the world pass by.  I have great memories of taking our younglings - who are now 13 and 16 years old - there over the years and hope to go back many times.  The best vacation spot is not where the best attraction is, but where you make memories with your family.

I was going to go with Firenze and Tuscany, but I don't have access to those images at work. I'll post that later I guess.  This is my second choice (but only because BossLady couldn't come along):

Alpamayo in the Cordillera Blanca:

This is a shot from High Col Camp.  Turning 180 degrees, was this mountain Quitaraju:

The valley between the two:

This is Artesanraju, which we passed on the hike to base camp.  Many people believe it is the inspiration of Paramount Picture's mountain:

I'll try to get the pictures of Dicomano and Firenze later.  That is a beautiful part of the world.  Makes me wish I could speak Italian...

Unfortunately, I'm out of this one. Partly due to the same problem as sawman - I just haven't been anywhere interesting, except Prague when I was about 13 years old. And technically, that multi wouldn't be legal here, but it's a damn fine gesture from SOG. :-D

Manas Air Base (the airport), a little ways outside of Bishkek. I was there from May through September of 2008.  I got to go off base 4 times: 2 hiking trips and 2 trips into Bishkek shopping, eating, and going to museums. Local civilians (both Natives Kyrgyz and ethnic Russians) got to work on base so we actually were able to interact with a lot of non military people, which is nice on a deployment. Love, love, loved being in Kyrgyzstan!

Unfortunately the US pulled out of Kyrgyzstan last year (although our presence was ultimately politically unpopular), so if I ever do get to go back it WILL be for vacation.

Province of cordoba argentina, not the best pics ever but ones i had handy of my previous trips. The first two of a trip i did with my motorcycle and the lower two some places you can only reach trekking.

Its my favourite because you have everything in very little distance which is not common in my country. You have mountains, lakes, heat, snow, great roads, great trekking routes, big tourist places, small isolated spots where people seem to live in another century, etc.

Cool prize, thanks SOG and MT!

My wife and I spent a great 2 weeks in the UK in late 2012. It was a bit of a whirlwind tour, but we got to see parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. We opted to go on a coach tour which meant we didn't have to worry about driving ourselves. Now we've had a taste, I'd love to go back again one day and make my own way (and spend a lot more time in Scotland and Wales).

Here's a few pics:

I really loved the Azores islands. Great scenery, nice weather, great food, nice people and not too many tourists.

I've been to most music festivals on the 500km range but never Exit. A bunch of my friends are going this year but the music there never appealed to me too much. I must be betting old, drinking and partying was usually a good enough reason to travel the distance. :drink:

I can't say I really have a favorite vacation spot. Rather my most memorable vacations have been those that my wife & I have got in the car without a destination in mind and just headed that direction stayed wherever and did whatever along the way with no schedule and no cares. I love doing that that to me is the most entertaining and relaxing. We always make it a point to eat places that we can I eat at home. And usually these little vacations are just 100 miles or so away from where we live. Never to a real big vacation destination but this kind of a little small town off the beaten path.

Disney World is our favorite vacation spot.  My wife and I had our honeymoon there and try to go back every other year.  Staying on site at one of their nice resorts makes the difference.  I have been to the parks just for the day and it's fun but not all that great.

I am originally from Mexico, which has many interesting, beautiful and affordable places to spend vacations. Our latest trip, about 2 years ago, was to Puerto Vallarta (Jalisco)- Nuevo Vallarta (Nayarit), a coastal region of the Mexican Pacific known as the Nayarit Riviera.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton vacationed there a lot in the '50's and 60's, and really started the development of that area (which incidentally, it still retains its local flavor - not like the Cancun region). Here are a couple of shots of the hotel/resort where we stayed.

I'd say Rapperswil, Switzerland. It's got a nice history which one can really see in the center, some cool spots and lots of places to chill. Not sure if you can feed the deer that live on the edge of the old tower (or maybe it's a fort) but not a whole lot of chances to see something like that elsewhere.
And if you're feeling lazy you can just sit back on a multitude of benches and take in the scenery.

For me at least it would have to be Lake George, NY.  Great in the summer and great in the winter, my favorite place is Carey's Lakeside Cottages, a small motel that my family had been staying at every summer for roughly two generations.

The Lake

Gore Mountain in the winter

One of the most beautiful places I visited the last couple of years would have to be a small town in Germany, called "Beilstein"

It's a small town located in the Cochem-Zell district in Rhineland Germany, on the shore of the beautiful river Moselle.
Every pic that you take in this town could be a picture postcard, such a nice place ...  And they have some excellent white wines and great food there  :drink:.

The town is located in a narrow valley, and overlooking the town there's the ruins of Castle Metternich, which can be visited and they offer a stunning overview on the town and the Moselle.

P.S. I could not just pick one picture, so I posted a couple of them  ::).

Mine would have to be Disney World or one of the Seven Wonders of the World, The Grand Canyon, which I'll be rafting through in the next couple of weeks.

My favorite vacation spot is Fair Haven Beach. I spent so much time there as a kid camping that I know the park as well as my house. It has so many things to do: hiking, boating, swimming, camping, and my favorite, fishing.

Whew, seems I remembered this thread just in time.

Favourite spot: Lake Siljan

In the middle of Dalarna province, in the heart of Sweden.
Gorgeous hills & forests, gorgeous lake:

You can see the Dalahäst carvers at Nüsnäs:

And of course at the north shore is the city of Mora:

Some of you might have heard about it ;)

And yes, it looked like this as Åsa and I visited there (too long ago  ):
