[CLOSED] 2014 Review Competition.
on: July 08, 2014, 12:31:44 AM
Yes, we're doing it again. :woohoo:

After the great success of last year's competition we really felt we had too give you good people another chance to win something cool by writing a review.  OK, I have to admit that I don't know exactly what you might win here, but you folks know us, it's going to be good, right? ;)

We have some prizes! :D

First place will be the proud winner of a LM OHT in Coyote Tan.

Second place will be just as happy with a CRKT I.D Works Guppie

So the rules are going to pretty much unchanged from last year, but do take the time to read them:

1. What we are looking for is for you good folks to do a review of one of your own MT.  The review should be newly written for this competition and be all your own work.  We'd love to see reviews of tools that haven't been covered on the main site already, but it's not a must.

2. The style to be in line with the main site review format.  Please take the time to read this as it will make it far more likely your review will end up on the main site.

3. The closing date will be the 25th of July, any entries after that won't count.

4. We will need a minimum of 5 reviews to judge.  Any less than that and we figure it's no longer much of a competition.

5. Please post your review in it's own thread but post a link here so as I can keep track. :)

Over 18's only please.

This isn't going to be a random pick for a winner, this will be a judged competition with the site admin staff and moderators picking a winner, so make your review as good as you can. ;)  Best of luck folks and lets get typing. :tu:

Any questions please just ask.

I was hoping the review competition would be back this year! :woohoo:

I'll have to try my hand at writing another review. The trick will be finding a tool that hasn't already been reviewed on the main site...

Hummm....

Good question.

My gut reaction is that it'd be OK in terms of the competition, but wouldn't likely end up on the main site.  Sound fair?

Perfectly :)

I might try and carry a different one at work for a bit so I can review it properly.

I am nominating GnT's review on my tool.

Kampfer was nice enough to lend me the only existing Mini Surge for a video review comparing it to the big brother surge and the Wave it's built around.  I have to say Breezy12 does excellent work.  not only were the new tools added but the Mini Surge has been polished up and all the joints work much more smoothly than the original wave.

Enjoy the video guys!!!

No need for a DSLR, all my photos are taken with either a 10 year old digital cam or my phone.

I know, and I take 3 or 4 hundred photos a month with my Phone or little point and shoot,  but I wish I had a better Camera (in the works) and I hate when my camera THINKS it knows what I want.  Kinda like Microsoft office when you try to highlight a word, and it insists on adding the space at the end!  :viking:

so I am very excited for my new Camera that I plan on getting around January,  A Canon rebel T5i

I've already done a first impressions thread on my new Juice S2... which was fairly damning of it, but it wasn't a review.

Maybe I should do a more formal, properly written one for it? I'll give it a try.

Yes go for it.  All reviews of a tool whether positive or negative is helpful to a new buyer.  It give the new buyer something to think about.

Will the judgement be the quality and objectivity of the review?
Or will it be also based on originality?

Sweety and I have yet to write a review about a certainly not yet featured MT, but it is rather on the cheesy side. I am not sure if it will fit in this contest.
(I can send some details via pm, but I don't want to spoil the surprise  ;) )

Yes to all. :D  Personally I place a lot of emphasis on the objectivity of the review.  For example; a reviewer who starts with the premise that all Leatherman products are perfect really isn't going to be giving the readers a genuine review IMO.
Originality is perhaps the least of these.  Personally I don't have an issue with two reviews coming to the same conclusions on a MT, just so long as the review isn't pure plagiarism.  A new review will always bring something new to the table, even if it's just because of the differing circumstances of the reviewers.  So Gerber's short screwdrivers might be a real problem to some folks, much less so to others.

Cheesy and fun reviews sound great for the purposes of this competition, but might have less chance of ending up on the main review site. :)
