Had a go at TTi scale anodizing...
on: July 16, 2014, 09:07:34 PM
And it worked out pretty well.  I really didnt expect the cast rough part to color at all, I expected just the flats to take but the whole scales turned color right fast.  It sucked up the juice too at about 1.5A peak.  The SAK parts I was anodizing only got up to 100 mA.

Very nice :tu:.

Have you tried any other colours yet? Specifically blue?

Im working on a bunch of SAK Ti scales that Im going to color in all the Ti anodize colors possible.  From experimenting though the higher voltage colors take a littel more care and I want to redo my setup and then do more experimenting.  But yes I want to try the blue and bronze, and eventually the toxic green look.

Yes, be VERY careful. if you're getting up towards Green you will be dealing with over 100V DC and that stuff can kill you stone dead.
Might even be worthwhile getting some insulating gloves.

I can attest that 440 VAC 3-phase SUCKS!!

the radar I worked on had a required monthly check that involved a 1000-to-1 Oscope probe, with dielectric fluid, baby power on hands, electricians gloves, with leather gloves over them, standing on a 1" rubber pad, and a rope around your waist leading to another sailor who was ready to jerk you away.  that is how we tested the 65,000 VDC at high amps (do not remember the amperage, but I think it was somewhere between 40 and 50)

I loved the Navy

I do wear rubber gloves, but thicker ones would be prudent.   :tu:

This reminds me of my days in grad school.  I worked in a lab where we did high energy electron bombardment with alot of homemade gear.  There were very high voltage sources all over the place and accidents happen.  My professor said always keep one hand in your pocket and I thought he was kidding.. but he was serious.

He said the electricity would go through your arm to the floor vs your chest if you hand was in your pocket.  Through arm wouldnt kill you, vs through torso would (only takes a few mA to stop your heart). :D  He put this into practice once by accident and the current actually blew a hole out the bottom of his shoe.... :D  I never felt safe there...

I take alot of precations, and using a grounded power source for the current makes me feel safer than a DIY one too... but ya safety is important!
