:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh thats a beauty... I don't own an axe, not really, but something close and I think that beauty would fit right in (if this does not count, I swear I'm going to buy me another axe, or steal someones :P):

So the conditions were not to clear (to me), on
Why I love these "axes"? Well, I dabble in medieval martial arts (primarily the Long sword) but occasionally we also train with the halberd. I'm also a member of a medieval group (see the flag?),

Why I love the Gingrich Tactical axe? Well, besides that it is very pretty and  worthy, it would be an awesome addition to my weaponry and a useful too.

I carry a Harbor Freight 2 lb. Fireman’s Axe in the toolbox I have in my daily driver truck (1979 Ford F150 4X4), along with other tools (including a machete, sledge hammer, crow bar, small shovel, hydraulic jack, stands, ropes and auto-mechanic tools, etc.).

My favorite axe (hatchet) is my Helko claw hatchet i got from lowtech about a year ago. It needed some TLC and a handle. I gave the axehead a good cleaning with vinegar to remove the rust, a good oiling and sharpening. Good as new.  :D

more on it in a related thread in the axehole annals... ::)

Woahh, thanks Gingrich Tactical, that is a nice giveaway.  :salute:

Most of the work around here gets done by these three.
The smallest is an HB that I got real cheap from a local junk shop. Score.
The medium one isn't branded and was getting binned so I took it in and cleaned it up. Total workhorse.

The larger is a Plumb and it is my most loved axe. It was my grandads. When I was little he taught me how to replace the handle and would let me use other things in his shed such as the wire-nib burner. Many years later when he passed on, the fight over it with my uncle was settled by the fact that it was my name and not his burned into the handle under the many layers of oil. That was fourteen years ago. Any work done with this axe is enjoyed as I remember my time spent with grandad.

Here's my top choice ATM, a smaller hatchet head hung on a slightly longer handle than normal.  The fact I did the work shouldn't make you  worried, not at all.

I've chosen three axes. If I could only own three of my axes these are the ones.

Gransfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet:
Absolutely fantastic tool. This has been heavily used during deep winter when the only way of keeping the -17C at bay was by wood processing and loading up the woodstove. The fire wasn't just essential for warmth, but for cooking and water purification too. I was having to stop on the boat for a couple of weeks until the weather abated as I couldn't get my car anywhere near a road, and stopping at the boat was the only way to ensure I could get to work (30 mins walk from the boat, several hours walk from home). This tool has never let me down, holds an edge well, and exudes quality. Highly recommended

Roselli R850:
Another excellent axe, but takes a little bit of getting used to. Having a wide scandi ground edge, the axe performs very differently to a conventional axe pattern. If you're cross cutting for example, you can't cut at an angle as you would with the WH above, as you've got a high chance of the axe glancing off. Instead you need to strike more perpendicular to the log and make a few parallel cuts. The axe won't bite deep, and at first you'll think you're onto a loser, but after a couple of cuts, the "wedge action" of the edge will start BIG chips flying, and you'll be through it in a short space of time. It splits excellently too, and it's almost impossible to get it stuck. Plus you can choke up on the bearded head if needed. Very counterintuitive in use, but well worth playing with one if you can.

Snail Brand Roofing Tool:
In the good old hypothetical SHTF scenario away from home with only one knife or axe to save you from the cold, wet, and everything else - THIS would be my tool of choice. Sod the super high spec knife stels with fandango ultra-modern handle materials, this rusty old lump will be far more usefull. Chances are, I'll NOT be in the woods, even if I'm in the country. With this I can cut anything I need to from wood for the fire, to the fish to cook over it, the sticks to cook it on, and the fork to eat it with. I can break up pallets or fencing and salvage/resuse the wood AND nails, get into/out of somewhere that would otherwise be off limits, or shift stubborn objects .... basically I can do a lot more with this than other cutting tools providing I still have the strength and wits to drive it. It was a spur of the moment ebay buy, and one of my better decisions. Absolutely love it.

Enough words - a couple of piccies

Nice write up as usual mate :tu:

I wonder it there is a more modern version of the roofers tool for use in as survival situation? I suppose the tactical tomahawk might be its direct descendent? :)

Cheers Mike  :)

I have seen some "rescue axes" and assorted hawks which have the chopping plus pry plus spike, but not with a functional hammer head. A standard wood axe poll is meant for contact with wood (to drive the head in further, or release it) and not hardened, and I can't recall seeing a modern one that was properly hardened for use as a "universal adjuster"  ;) :D

Yeah its a very versatile design which makes you wonder why its not been copied?

Having said the Ranger Knives did an entry tool which was very similar that I sold for peanuts...:(

I have a tilers hammer that needs restoring, but I also have this

It was cheap ok? Otherwise it would have been a whack of money on a Riflemans 'Hawk from Cold Steel, which I'd never use.

I'll be back,I think I've a headache coming on :surrender:

I will not be entering this giveaway, since I'm not much of an axe collector, and I think others here will appreciate such a great looking piece of art more than me.

But I will post a pic of my "camping axe" (the only axe I own and use).  I only have one pic of it, and that's the one you can see here, I was taking pics of my Opinel Outdoor and thought it would look nice if I placed my Fiskar X7 alongside on the pic.

Just to be clear: I do not want to participate in this giveaway, I just want to post a pic of my axe. ;)

Good luck guys, and a big thank you to Gingrich Tactical for their generosity  :salute:.

totally agree, Grathr. :tu: I have a Fiskars axe that I use at home, and it seems to be indestructible. even when the factory edge dulls with use, getting it back to a nice sharp edge is a relatively quick process.
