Should I replace my wave?
on: July 21, 2014, 06:07:36 PM
Hi,

I have had many knives for many years now and like the idea of a good multitool.  Was trying to stay under $50 but read many people saying the wave was great. I ended up picking up the wingman and the wave, but will be returning one.

I love the spring loaded pliers of the wingman but even as someone who hasn't used multitools in the past, I can tell the wave is a much better product.

My issue is the blades have some vertical play.  The plain edge and saw and file all have play. The serrated is perfect. Since the plain edge will be my most used blade I wasn't to ask about this.  Is blade play common for multitools?  I know with a folding knife any amount of play is unacceptable. There isn't much play but there is enough that I can hear it clicking when wiggling it up and down.

Hi!  Welcome to MTO!

My Waves do not have this issue. How much play are we talking about? Maybe you should send it in for repair.

Could you return then both and consider a Rebar?

welcome to the forum!

where are you located? if you're in the US, I would absolutely send that Wave in for warranty repair. you should have a repaired or new Wave within a week or two.

outside the US, you'll have to go through one of Leatherman's distributors, but odds are we have someone on the forum who has experience with that particular distributor. ;)

I was thinking of a rebar but I think I like the blades opening from the outside

There isn't much play. But coming from folding knives it would be something I would be getting fixed. Not sure if a certain amount of play in the blades of multitools is acceptable

Hello and welcome,
If you bought it from a local store then you can always go back for an exchange.

I exchanged for a new one. The serrated blade has play as does the saw.

The plain edge has no play which is the most important for me.

Does anyone know if the victorinox spirit's tools lock into place better?

Maybe I will try one more time and hope for everything to lock in well.

I love the OHO but feel I would prefer everything locking into place over OHO.
