111mm mod help please
on: July 22, 2014, 11:40:26 AM
A friend of mine wants a Vic Outrider but with an Electrician's blade and Combo tool instead of the opener layer.  Can I take a 93mm Solo blade, reprofile it and fit it in place of the cap lifter, and a 91mm Combo tool from a Compact, drill it out and fit it in place of the can opener?

Ah, wrong pin sizes.  I think the Outrider uses 2.5mm pins for the main pivots, same as a 91mm knife.  So a reprofiled 91mm blade plus a standard combo tool should work, as long as they're the right thickness for the back spring.

The Hunter comes with a Combo tool and a small serrated blade - It´s a slidelock, though.
You should be able to replace the serrated with an electriciane blade, I think - Syph has had soem 111s apart, just like Hanksolon.
So let´s wait for someone who actually knows what he is talking about...

That was his first thought - buy an Outrider and a Hunter and swap the openers on the Outrider for the serrated blade/combo tool on the Hunter.  I was trying to work out if it could be done more cheaply.

I told him to buy a Spirit. :D

I would ask your friend, If a hunter combined with an Outrider would do the job.

I see one main issue: Electrician blade and Combo tool open from the same side. So a reprofiled old style hunters serrated blade would be a better idea. Everything else would depend on the reachability of the nail nick, after combining it.

(Electrician blade and 93mm blade have the wrong pin hole size. 84mm and 91mm electrician blades are pretty rare and too expensive for a mod job).

This thread, however gave me a great idea about my sea ranger, how to integrate a serrated blade into the opener layer (I rarely use the opener layer, but I want to have a tool for... opening can's and bottle)

Edit:
I told him to buy a Spirit. :D
This would be definitely cheaper than everything I proposed here.

Of course, need to keep the nail nicks accessible.  He wants the serrated blade for stripping cables, so a shortened and reground 91mm blade opposite a Combo tool would work just fine.

However, if I use a Hunter + Outrider, the leftover bits would make a Rucksack.  In fact, I'd be tempted to use a Workchamp + Hunter, then I could build a Tradesman or slide-lock Locksmith (if I add a backside Phillips) from the leftovers.

I think it's 3 mm for the main pivots and 2.5 mm for the others on 111 mm.

Now he wants to swap the backside awl for a fine screwdriver.  There's one on the Workchamp XL, but I don't want to have to buy one of those just for the driver.  Is the backside fine screw driver on the 111mm knives the same as the one on the 91mm series?

Not exactly. 3mm main pivots you may find on newer knifes, especially with the liner lock. Slide lock models have 2,5mm main pivots.

That was my understanding too.  My friend has specifically asked for the slide lock version, which should make tool swaps a little easier

Thanks to you for the precisions. I didn't know, it's true I only disassembled liner lock versions.

Lovely, thanks.  I had seen those pics before, but can never find stuff again when I need it, or I get sucked down the rabbit hole that is the Mod Squad.

Well, my mate has decided that adding a scraper to the inside of the cap lifter of his Outrider is enough.  Shame, as it means I don't get to play with one of the 111mm knives.  Yet.
