Tool Separation Anxiety Disorder
on: July 23, 2014, 01:40:03 AM
We're in the midst of moving. Because we're only moving a few blocks, we're not packing everything, moving, then unpacking. We're taking small loads.

All my MTs and SAKs are in the new place. Okay, well, most of them.

And I'm all nervous and twitchy.

I only have access to my SOG Crosscut and Wave... which are my EDC.

And the Micra I have along in my EDC for give-away purposes.

And the Rebar in my home emergency kit.

And the PST sitting on my coffee table.

But other than those... NONE!

There, there sweetheart, you will only be away from your loved ones for a short time, and then you will have the joy of being re-united after such a heart-wrenching separation  :pok:

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was going to be about courthouses, airlines, and other places where blades weren't allowed.

The easy solution is that once the MTs start sleeping at the new place, so do you.

Well that's easy. :P

I'm going away for a week and have spent a few hours already trying to decide what to take with me.

I'm down to Spirit X or Juice CS4 or Juice SC2 or Mini in the pliers department. SAKs? Wenger Traveler (red or stainless) or Wenger Urban. And Vic Executive or Style Cs for the back pocket. And Zebralight H51 + ITP A3 SS or ITP A2 for flashlights.

And then the rest :ahhh

I used to get twitchy when I'd go to take a different Leatherman than usual. The Rebar had been my EDC pretty much solidly since I got it and every time I wanted to take the Blast or something else I'd be like "Oh but what if I need a serrated knife... or like... hard wire cutters or something?" and would quickly swap the belt sheath to the Rebar again and all would be well.

Nowdays I'm perfectly happy to leave the Rebar at home and give one of the others a turn (like the PST2 is on duty this month).

I get that same anxious feeling if I try to leave the house without a Leatherman and just a SAK.

Not quite but kind of the same thing :P

Lynn - I feel for you honey  :(
Maybe you should pop over to their place every couple of hours to check they are still OK?
Or employ a nanny/toolsitter to keep them safe whilst you are not there.

And how could you possibly manage with the meagre collection left in the old house :o

I am in a similar situation right now - In Tokyo, 10 hours flight away from my tools in Sydney. I hope they are OK.
Had the difficult decision of working out which ones to bring with me.
Finalised on a Vic Compact, Woodsman (Explorer plus saw), Wenger Evogrip 81, and Leatherman PS4 - No full sized pliers
I hope I cope.
... And also remember to put them all in the hold luggage when I return, otherwise the collection will be a bit smaller.

I've seen a few cases of this at work with folks I've gifted stuff to.

AG lent out here Style CS,started suffering serious anxiety after about ten minutes. I didn't know whether to laugh or sympathise!

The guy I'd gifted the spiderguppie to needed some maintenance done on it,which I did on Sunday night. I only seen him today for the first time since Friday, when I took it home. Thought he was going to kiss the damn thing!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

It isn't a disorder.

As I've often said, man made tools and tools made man, we're interrelated. Its like missing a toe- it is painful and embarrasing have happen, scary to think about, and a significant insult or punishment to inflict on another person

Necessity is the mother of invention. If you're not ready, it's "a mother". If you are, it's "mom".
