111mm lock question.
on: July 23, 2014, 10:53:03 PM
Hello to all. I don't post on here much but still drop in to read and check out the pictures once in awhile. Lots of great information with many knowledgable folks.

So I wondered if anybody here would like to share their opinion on the liner and slide button locks on the 111mm saks. Which do you prefer? Which do you think is stronger and more dependable?

I am thinking about picking one up for edc and outdoor trips. Thanks for any thoughts or opinions that you would like to share.

Jim

I like the liner best, but non of them are %100 dependable. If you really need something dependable use a fixed blade a full tang blade.

Usually when I go to outdoor trips I carry a sak and a full tang blade.

Liners are (mostly) black, Slides are (mostly) nylon red. Easy choice there.  :D

Liner is indeed stronger and more comfortable to hold, but it's also a pain to close right-handed.

Anyway, after a few months of fiddling (and a few lovebites on the fingers) I can open and close the linerlock one-handed, with any hand...

The victorinox slide lock holds the blade open with a pin so the liner locks are stronger. The old Wenger rangers however have a liner slide lock. (New ones have a liner lock with button)

Like 'em both. Liner is probably stronger......

The other color option for a liner lock is camo! :tu:

I didn't realize that the liner locks were black and the slides were red. Once again my observation skills come up a little short. I like both colors however when I think sak, I think red. I also suspect the red might be a little more people friendly and since I move between city and country often that is a consideration.
Thanks for the replies, looks like the handle color makes this an easy one for me. Wish I would have realized this before I started a thread.

Now I just need to decide between two and three layers. I am sure the wood saw would be useful once in a while but probably would not really see much use. Have to wonder if it's worth the extra width. I am wanting to carry this knife everyday either in my back pocket beside my wallet or vertically in my front pocket with a beaded lanyard hanging out of the pocket.
Anybody have any thoughts as to the pocketability of the three layer models versus the two layer models?

"Victorinox’s own tests show the liner-lock to be stronger than their locking bolt, which is why they went to the liner-lock on the Rescue Tool and their dual-lock knives."

Ya the little metal pin on the slider lock is pretty small, and also only held in place by the plastic parts of the scale and slider lock.  So yes, the liner lock is much stronger.  It also has the locking bottle opener which is a very much bigger version of the bottle opener great for prying.   :tu:

Hmmm! Not really liking your description of the slide lock Syph007 and I had forgotten about the larger locking screwdriver. Plus can't really argue with Victorinox's own tests .
I guess if I decide to go with liner lock and black scales I can add a brightly colored lanyard to 'friendly' up the look a little. Great info guys, I really appreciate it.

Khaki or Camouflage options are even scarier than black…
You can get some Yellow Stayglow scales (off a Rescue Tool) for the Linerlock to make it more friendly.
Or you can get a dual-density Linerlock (Hunter, Forester, Dual-Pro). They are black but have red, green or orange rubber inserts.

To answer the original question, definitely Liner lock on a 111mm.  I like the Wenger side-button liner lock, but still prefer the original Vic liner lock better.

For Edc or outdoor use, I highly recommend the 111mm trekker with plain edge.  It usually comes in black, but could be found in different colors too.

both mechanism are good but on linerlocks, blade's position is better, in the centre of the knife. also most of the linerlocks are oh, i think all 111 mm's must be oh.

Haven't ordered one yet but I am really leaning towards the liner lock. Probably will order over the weekend or early next week.

I must say that I like the sliding lock better. Its not strong, but very easy to operate, and In my opinion more comfortable to use. I do however sheldom put any negative pressure on a folder. And when I do it is very little.

I like the red scales that come with the sliding lock better.  I use non locking pocket knives everyday so the slide lock would probably be fine . I do like the larger locking screwdriver that the liner lock offers and I suppose if I'm gonna have a lock stronger is better.
