The Great MP600 Burial Project of 2014-15
on: July 25, 2014, 11:19:14 PM
Our brother Zed (Paul) had the fine idea to bury his MP600 in the ground for a few days to test its rust resistance and functionality, and the MP600 survived unscathed.  In the spirit of Freedom, Justice and Sweet Ignorance, and with the consent of Paul who started it all, we will now bury a new MP600 and sheath in the red clay Kentucky earth for one year.  And the Lord willing, a year from now we will dig it and and say, "Geez, that was stupid."

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger, "anything worth doing is worth overdoing."  And it is in that spirit that we will likely destroy a perfectly good MP600 that would otherwise enrich - and possibly save -someone's life.  But if we can't do something stupid, who can?  If not now, when?  We must push back the boundaries of sanity for ourselves and our posterity.

So today I have laid to rest our little friend, who I will call Lazarus, in the bottom of a post hole behind my shed.  A year from now, if I am still among the living, and if I can find it, I will dig it up, hose it off, soak it in penetrating oil for a couple of days, and see what happens.  I suspect it will be rusted and unusable, but we won't know for sure until it is resurrected. It is only then that we can declare this mighty venture the most gloriously stupid thing to have ever occurred on MTO.

So on this date, July 25, 2014, we lay to rest our dear friend Lazarus.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.  Yeah you are stainless, but you are going to rust.

A year in the ground! Very cool. I think its a excellent idea and can't wait to see what happens. I guess i'll have to wait a year to find out though.  :D I wonder if we can keep the thread going for the whole year.  :D

Hey, I watched a flashlight blink for 37 months, so I am well qualified to stare at a hole in the ground for a year.

Nice work Mr Noodle :salute:

That soil looks quite sandy, maybe the sheath will hold a bit of moisture back amd actually help it rust ...? Then again, it'll be very interesting to see how well the sheath holds up to a year of interrment too  :D My money is on the clips that fastens the head to the handles getting scuppered, and the rest of the tool bouncing back after a few days bathing in oil or vinegar  :)

It's like a multitool time capsule  :D Loving it!

I couldn't help but notice this one is not BO. I wonder how the coating may have helped protect it from rust.  ???

That aside, cool project. I do think a year is a little long though. Perhaps a month would suffice.

Wow, what a test!!
Pity you couldn't have buried one from each of the other 3 (SOG / LM / Vic') along with the Gerber!
That would have been awesome   :ahhh

EDIT

Got me thinking...
Couldn't MT'o get both SS and BO models from each manufacturer and test to destruction.

It would be great to see which manufacturer has faith in their product.

I'm off on one now!!

How about putting a model from each of the big four into a fish tank and filling with earth then leaving it outside - that way we could observe the decay in real time!!

Maybe a Perspex tank with drain holes???

Anybody??

The MP600 taking one for the team in the name of science. :hatsoff:

We could add a link to it at the OP in the Anniversary GAW index once the month is over to remind us next year as we'll surely be checking that one next year too.

You Sir may be over qualified as that was an epic test of blinking and blinking and well more blinking.  Now begins the watching and waiting followed by more watching then waiting.   Hoooray for these test and for those hardy enough to do the testing.   :drink:.

We just need an extra 3 holes a SOG, a LM & a Vic hole  :P :D.

For me Gerbers rust worse than LMs & Vics are the best , I can't say I have had a rusty SOG though   , I don't think they would be better than Vics though

This is really neat powernoodle :tu:  A year will fly right by, so before we know it, we'll be seeing what has become of poor Lazarus.  I don't think I could bury one of my MTs like that, especially for a year...

I'm going to try to remember where I buried it.  I can't say exactly where it is, because one of you guys might come rescue it.

We got 2.5" of rain last night.  Its going to be a long, hot, cold, dry, rainy, snowy year for Lazarus.
