What would you give, and why?
on: July 26, 2014, 10:04:31 PM
So, the last few weeks I have started listening to the Gear Geeks Live podcast.
http://www.geargeekslive.com/category/gear-geeks-live-podcast

At some point during a few of the shows they have posed (something like) the following question to their panel: "if you had to chose just one item of EDC gear to give to everyone you know, what would it be?

I've been pondering that question myself recently. It's not necessarily an easy question to answer, but I think the items that I have given that has been pretty universally liked, has been a few Vic MiniChamps. Small, non-threatening, useful, nicely made.
Interestingly, one of the recent panalists' answers was "A Vic Cadet", which I think would also be an excellent choice. I guess my mind wonders whether Vic's have some sort of universal appeal, which may explain why there are just so many of them out there.

So, what say you, what would you give, and why?

Vic pioneers/soldiers/wenger SI.
Great solid non threatening tool, that dont take up too much space in your pocket, and can still fix most everyday problems.
I have already given one to my father, and a wenger SI to a friend.

I would give out a flashlight, a small AAA light that can be kept on keychain. Most of my friends will never need an EDC tool, the light would be more useful for them.

I would say the same. AA or AAA light. Probably keychain size.

No idea Mike.....  ::)

Personally I'd give what I almost always give - a Tinker.  It was my first SAK, and I've given probably four or five of them away.  I actually gave away that first Tinker, but I got it back.  :)

I'm with you Sawman.
It has fantastic capability in such a small package.

And you are giving this to 'everyone you know'
- So this includes non tool people and (I hope I am not being sexist here) women, many of whom would not want to carry anything much bigger than a Classic.
- Also it is so reasonably priced

The Cadet is a nice option, small compact and nice attractive alox - But ..... no scissors, which is an EDC must have for me.

It's hard to find any reaosns why anyone would not carry a Classic

My other suggestion would be one of the Swisscards - Again massive functionality in a very small, cheap package.

If you'd truly want it to be EDC, I'd say a 58mm SAK (or, alternatively, 74mm or 64mm).

I think the nailclipper ones might be nice, as well. But you can't go wrong with a Classic, certainly one of the Limited Edition ones with  the funny scales  :tu:

since it has to be a part of the EDC, I'd go with a Vic Farmer. best bang for the buck, although most people I know would be better served with scissors or a file instead of the saw

I would give a Vic Super Tinker or Fenix E01, you can't beat either for function vs price vs quality IMO!

A Vic Classic,  as said above why would anyone be without one?  or a LM Micra. More capability than a Classic and not a hell of a lot bigger.

Being totally sexist, I'd probably give Classics to the girls and Micras to the guys.

I've given away three Victorinox Explorers, one Leatherman Crater C33T, and one Led Lenser P3 to friends and family, so I guess the Explorer is my favorite tool to give away  ;).

P.S. I always add a stainless steel pin in the whole under the corkscrew.

To all my friends? A fluffy teddy bear. Seriously, not all of them should wield tools or knifes.

I have to go with the Vic Cadet. Brilliant knife, compact, good utility and lasts for aeons.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Either a Rambler or a PS4 Squirt.

New to the forums. My pick would be the SAK hiker. Zebra F-301 and a little fieldnotes original.

Welcome to the boards, Brezinskie!

It's not even a question for me, although it is a choice between three similar tools: Leatherman Micra, SOG Crosscut, Leatherman Style CS.

All of my friends have one of these tools. Almost all of them were gifts from me. The Style CS went to a couple of my friends looking for 'flatter' tools.

If I had to cut the selection down to one, it'd be the Micra.

EDIT: Oh... and as for the why. Stainless steel, so wears well. Lots of useful functions in a small space/weight, and most important, great scissors.

If i didn't have to pay for it Alox Rambler.

I regularly give out Vic classics. Even with the classics some (like my mother) remove it from their keyrings cause it too bulky.

No point giving an EDC that someone wont use

I would go with a keychain light like a Fauxton.  I think it would be more universally welcome than a knife or multitool.
My EDC:
Leatherman Skeletool   Led Lenser P3 AFS P
Leatherman Style CS    "Fauxton"
Sharpie Twin Tip           Bic Mini

Last time I was at a certain friend's house, I gave him and his wife fauxtons. he looked at it with what seemed to be disdain. Later that night, he called, and said he needed to use the fauxton. Ha! Great gifts.
