Knives in books.
on: July 27, 2014, 06:53:54 PM
Now that both the better half and I are retired, we finally have the time for reading. I've beenworkingmy way through the Tony Hillerman novels that are muder who-done-its set in the 4 corners area of the desert/canyon southwest. The main character is a Lt. Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo reservation police, but his investigations take him all over the 4 corners area. He often uses his pocket knife for various things, and sometimes it's reffered to as a Swiss Army knife.

I've also been going through the Stephen Hunter books of Bob Lee Swagger, the ex-marine sniper that gets into all sorts of deadly adventures. He seems to prefer a Case stockman, and is almost scornful in one book towards the modern "tactical" folder.

Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

In the Biographies : "Stryker: the siege of Sadr city" , by Konrad R.K. Ludwig and "House to House" by staff sergeant David Bellavia, they both write about their Gerber tools and knives.

Dirk Pitt saves the day(again) with a Vic Tinker in one of Clive Cusslers thrillers...can't remember which one ???
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

It also has a very interesting use for a bang stick. :)  My favorite Clancy novel. :tu:

Can't forget Dr. Lecter's EDC of choice.  In Hannibal he carries and uses a Spyderco Harpy, and later in the book buys another Harpy and a Civilian.
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D

In the third book of The Millennium trilogy, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, a Milton Security representative used her SAK to remove a hard drive from a stalker's computer.  In the same book, a sheathed Mora knife is mentioned, too.

In almost every Clive Cussler novel Dirk Pitt finds a SAK and uses it as part of his daring escape or survival strategy.

It always amazed me that the SAK would be that common in the books and Clive never felt the need to describe it in detail (like he does with the cars, Doxa dive watch etc) nor does Dirk Pitt ever see the need to have his own, seemingly preferring to just wait and find one along the way.  Kind of like a sloppy MacGuyver....

For all the Kindle fans out there.
Former star of the TV show "Dude, You're Screwed", Thomas D. Moore, has a book out titled "Tales of a Wander Man: On The Road With Tomahawk"
The book is a combination of autobiography and survival manual.  And in that book, he uses a fixed blade Russell Green River Knife and a Victorinox Hiker SAK

Leathermans are often mentioned in the Andy McNab books. The protagonist does lament the time it takes to get at a knife in one though, using the pliers to stab someone in a hurry.

I noticed this as well. Always thought it a bit stance that Pitt would not have his own. In the Cussler books dealing with the Fargo's, Sam Fargo seems to always have a SAK on him, as well as a small flashlight. Niether is ever described as to any make or model.
