Basic Pry Bar Comparison
on: July 28, 2014, 12:58:51 PM
Apologies if this kind of thread exists elsewhere. I saw one praising the services of the DoohicKey and another for Shard lovers and so I thought, Why not line mine up to show those who have more than one under consideration?

Here they are, the basic affordable keychain prybars, lined up by size.

Of probable importance is the thickness of the pry end. CountyComm, Shard, and DoohicKey are thinnest, with the Brewzer a middling but still functional second, and the Boker a nearly useless last place of spoon-handle thickness.

A few other rare points of interest:

Boker = Titanium
Boker = Dedicated glass breaker
DoohicKey = Metric & Imperial scale
DoohicKey = Three wrench sizes
Shard = Philips driver

Nice comparison shot.  However, you're missing perhaps the best of the small pry tools, the PWII.

You're right! And I own one too. First sign of addiction: Too many to keep track of. Anyway, too lazy now to retake pic with all six. Maybe another day. Cheers.

I'm most interested in their box-opening capabilities - something the Vox and Doohickey advertise as being able to do. How do they perform, and do the others work as well?

I have the Shard and yes it will cut thru packaging tape.

Yeah, most of them perform acceptably opening boxes, although I haven't spent hours doing this with one of these mini tools and couldn't imagine it (at a job that requires such, for example). I personally prefer the quick clean work a blade makes of packaging tape. Regardless, a few points to consider: The Boker has a thick dull pry tip and is ill-suited for box opening. The Brewzer, on the other hand, has a slight indent on one side of the pry tip specifically to assist in this task. It works quite well. I also like the thin pry tip and length of the Widgey. The Shard has several sharpish edges as well, any of which could be used. Hope this helps!

Of the one piece tools I own, I find I use the ones that are simpler. I've never used the wrench on my Doohickey, but it has opened a few pop tops.
