Filleting Knife Question
on: July 28, 2014, 05:26:10 PM
I'd like to tap into the Forum's brain power for a while.
My Daughter & her boyfriend have recently started river fishing & have been asking me what would I consider to be a good fillet knife.
I don't know why they asked me I've never fished in my life!

A fillet knife should be around 6" long with a flexible blade, is that correct?

Anyway, I automatically thought of Mora
http://www.bushgear.co.uk/index.php/default/knives/mora-filleting-knife-long.html

There also seems to be a lot of internet mentions of Mustad, Martinni & Rapala.
Could any of the experts here please point me in the right direction as being the family "knife nut" I'd hate to recommend a piece of junk to them.

Thanks,

Dave.

While I personally do not have a Mora fillet knife I would say it's a safe bet that it will be a great slicer. Maybe someone else will chime in soon.

Only filetting knife I've had is Rapala, and I was impressed with it

Depends really on user experiance, budget, also type, size and number of fish being processed.

I'll probably tell them to go for a Mora.
More than likely one of these two.

I currently have a Giesser (was a gift) and a Tramontina (was super cheap). Both work well.

You could also look at Buck, Gerber, Victorinox, Dexter Russell/Green River, Knives Of Alaska etc.

Highly recommend having someone experienced show them the ropes for less frustration and more safety.

No problem. The lower one is great when cutting up bait for wharf or boat fishing. That is what I use it for anyway.

My friend swears by his Marttiini, the basic 6" one shown here IIRC: http://www.moonrakerknives.co.uk/marttiini.html

I use a Wusthoff filet knife ( yes a kitchen knife ) , I built a Pukko type sheath for it , it's my main Camp kitchen knife , and does double duty in the kitchen block . I like it as it's a paring knife with SMURFS , and has some reach .

A decision was finally reached.

They ended up going for the Mora 6", £19.99 at Clas Ohlson.

I wish I'd gone with them now, Clas Ohlson website are advertising "Cocraft Mora" knives for £7.99 or 2 for £10!
Might be worth a look.

They've actually had quite a lot of success recently.
Fishing on the local river system they have pulled in brown trout & are hoping for salmon.

Here's a link which briefly describes the local river fishing.
