I used to have an ST300 that accumulated surface rust just from being carried. I've since sold that but I remember it being a disappointment.

So, lets see your RUST BUCKETS. I want to see pics of the pitiful fast oxidizing metal that Leatherman prides themselves in using!

Actually, the pliers of my Wingman had started rusting a little. And I don't use my tools a lot, not to say at all. I sold it, though, so... no picture.

I haven't had this problem either, at least so far anyway.  I'm curious to see what pics others will post though :)

You know whats funny.  My new wave rusts easier and worse than my old pst or very beat up minitool.  Anyone else find the older ones less rust prone?

I recently looked up some used LMs in the local ads, but almost all of these had at least a bit of visible rust somewhere on the body.

That "corrosion story", together with the inside-opening tools and the high retail price (here where I live) is what I don't like about LM.

But I read someone's post on some EDC forum, the guy was basically saying that he encountered the same LM models being differently prone to corrosion. The first Wave he had was used for years (including the sea enviroment), yet didn't corrode at all. The second one gained the rust from the light EDC handling.

That would mean either LM changed something in the production, or, what he was suspecting, there is an industry of counterfeited tools.

My Wave started rusting pretty bad a few months after I got it. It was the first MT that I had EDCed. Cleaned and oiled it, no problems since. Never had any rust on my Wingman. Very minuscule rusting on my Skeletool. None on my Squirt or Style. My Wife's Juice (yea, I heard it) doesn't have any either but it lives in her purse in a sheath so it is very well sheltered.

I have created a routine of thoroughly cleaning and re-oiling my new tools right after I get them.

One of my leathermans when i got her, had little stains. I washed and oiled her good. Put her to rest in comfy place with rest of my tools. Two weeks after, i took her to play with me, and she had some rust marks all over. Sorry, no before or after pics. She is no longer with me...

None of mine have rusted, not even the driver bits.  My Skeletool puts the "every" in "everyday carry" and it's scratched and scuffed, but not a molecule of Fe2O3.

Could it be the annual bath in WD-40?

noticed by bag-carried ST300 (which has been untouched since I stashed it in there) was developing a few spots after 6-8 months....just cleaned them off with some oil so no pics. other than that, no issue on any of the others.

Dug up an old pic of my Skeletool before I cleaned it up. Various spots of rust are visible on the pliers head

Also, when he came up out of the "bath," the liquid was perfectly clear and had a water-like viscosity.

Definitely sounds like WD40

Maybe not - there is a oil we use in maintenance from time to time, here in Germany we call it "Weißöl/white oil", it´s a superliquid thin and completly clear paraffin oil (tech grade, medical grade is more expensive).
Have fun.

Michael

With so many complaints about LM rusting I find it interesting how we dont see any pics yet .
I have bought some old LMs that did have some VERY minor rust.  I haven't experienced LM rust on my own tools and they see wet conditions daily.

Thank goodness none of my tools have ever rusted. Could be partially due to the non-humid climate I live (SLC, UT)

I've had a few that had some surface rust, but none of my heavy users.  My current carry is a Rebar, just under a year on my belt and I use it every day with coolant soaked gloves pulling wet stringers out of my Lathe, and no rust.  Of course, our coolant has a rust inhibitor in it, but even with my sweaty hands it doesn't rust.

Now, I have had a few Waves get that Leatherman "Patina" we all know and love, they were bag tools.  But my PST is a 98 and it's perfectly clean, as is my sideclip.  Worst thing that happened to that one was a bit of green goo around the pivots.

I put a wet and dirty ST300 and Rebar into the shed three weeks ago.
I'll hose them again today and take pics in another week or so for you.
