Walking around downtown Montreal
on: August 09, 2014, 03:24:05 AM
I had some time to kill so I decided to walk around downtown a bit, mostly to test the camera on my new phone, especially the HDR mode. None of the photos were adjusted other than size.

I started near the Museum of Fine Arts

Montreal streets were sized for horses and carriages, so when cars came along they were a bit on the narrow side, this is the 2nd widest street in downtown core.

On this street we have the golden square mile, probably THE most expensive real estate in town, a residential block right in the middle of busy downtown core.

Peeking inside the fortress like outer buildings, not sure I'd want to live there if I could, air quality is probably worse than living next to a busy bus terminal.

There are still many remnants of older residential buildings, of course all repurposed by now, shops, restaurants, bars, etc.

Another major street, this one is mostly small shops and eateries that have expanded onto sidewalk and street. You will notice the excellent dedicated bike path on an already narrow street, in a city that's too cold to bike 6 months of a year.

There's really no new places to develop anymore, so older structures and parking lots are teared down for new structures.

And up

THE shopping street

Artifact from a bygone era when the government wasn't, you know, broke. Interesting trivia, during WWII, fearing German invasion, England sent all it's royal collection to Canada for safekeeping, stored in the basement of this very building.

One of the few remaining green oasis, overrun with people during lunch time.

Old and new.

Inside the building on the right, there's the indoor skating rink open all year long, if you got an iron butt and not afraid of falls on hard surface. I broke both bones in my left forearm doing stunts on rollerblade when I was 13, so I'm not touching it anytime soon!

Great pics!!  I love Montreal, especially Old Montreal.  Haven't had a good proper tour of the city in 15 years, drove through going to Ontario, but not stopped.

Great pictures :tu: It's an interesting combination of some very British elements, and what I'd think of as American elements.

Thanks for taking the time to do this :salute:
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I don't remember thinking they were tall, so it's more like high heels and short guy. >:D

I've seen only a few really tall women and they kinda intimidate me, I'm a bit more than 6 ft and I have to look up to see them, and they were not in heels. .

Nice pic's,  What's the phone?
Galaxy s5, great quality in bright conditions, not so much when it gets dark though.
