surge pocket clip ???
on: August 11, 2014, 06:30:35 PM
I got a surge I want to use a pocket clip on
The clip I have fits very lose and moves around to much

My question is are there different clips for leatherman tools ?

I thought they all used the same one besides the kick.

On the Leatherman website it shows that they clip fits the new Surge, but a reviewer agrees with you that it moves around too much.  It looks like there is only one flavor of clip for the new Surge, so you may be out of luck.

The clip was designed to fit wave, charge & surge.
But on surge it moves side to side a bit, I glued it shut when I use it.

Finally got a Surge? Cool!

I think the wobbly clip has even been reported to LM, they reacted that that was a "safety feature" so you wouldn't get stuck...

I know people have made it less wobbly by gluing a piece of plastic in the area where the clip clicks in.

I plane on it. I may just call though.

It's bull that they don't have a clip that works for it.

I see it differently. Clip keeps the multitools upright in the pocket and doesn't affect usage in a bad way.

I have the Original Surge, Surge and a Original Charge TTi. The amount of movement is the same for all.
However with the Charge it sits into the milled out slab reducing some of the play when not being worn.

When using the multitools I tend to put pressure on the clip.
The clip moves over, grip is more comfortable and much less pressure is applied to the attachment points.

I still think it's to sloppy a fit to use.

It is what it is and sadly that is that it isn't the best pocket.
For non work I carry the Charge with the clip and/or the Surge in a sheath on the belt or in the bag.
As said above it is an easy fix to glue in a small piece for the clip to sit against.

This about my only pet peeve with the Surge, the Mighty Surge.  There's an MTO fix here:

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,25502.0.html

I haven't tried it, but am getting closer - out of sheer annoyance factor 12 to the Nth degree.  It's a very good clip; it's the fit that just blows.  And, unless, fixed...it's a gift that just keeps on giving.   >:(

LM told me the same thing.  That it was a safety feature.  Really?  Is that why I go to grab the MUT first for belt use?  NO, it's because the MUT has a great clip that doesn't swing like a pendulum.  LM's answer is what you might call...hmmmmm...uh....unsatisfactory.  Also, probably not exactly, completely, and wholly, uh, true...   :poh:

Yeah, should have sorted it when they recently updated the Charge and Surge.

That's funny because that's when I contacted them to see if they would indeed rectify the situation - before the New Surge came out onto the market.  However, I have no earthly clue as to LM's timelines for production in that specific case, so it's not like I gave them a light bulb idea just in time.  Yeah, on the other hand it was crystal clear that they were NOT listening to me at all whatsoever.

Eh, moral to the story?  Any fix you can put in that works.  DIY.

Has anyone tried the aforementioned fix??

After playing with a pocket clip on a Surge and also being slightly annoyed by the play, I wonder if it could be reduced with shims or something in the areas shown in red:

I just realized it was already posted in this thread.

It would be easy enough to just glue a piece onto the end cap and file it down to fit.

I also reckon I could heat and bend the clip to fit. I've had no problems with the clip I reshaped for deep pocket carry with the Charge.

Yeah I would mod the Surge rather than the clip because it's the Surge that is the problem, not the clip, also you could then still use the clip for another tool.

Really though, I would prefer to sheath carry it.
