Lock Line Pliers by Ross Mfg- San Francisco
on: August 11, 2014, 07:57:44 PM
I picked this pair up from a 'bay auction.   This a the Lock Line Pliers from Ross Mfg in San Franciso California.  Their claim to fame is that the pliers will lock down on whatever it is holding and won't release it even when the handles are released.  Unique pliers to say the least and remind me of my treasured Plierenches.  This is another of the unque pliers on my list of wants so when it came in at my price I was pleasantly surprised.  These pliers often go for $25 to $35 or more.  I got this one considerably cheaper.

Note the really neat way the handles open.

Here's a link to the patent information for those who like to see such things. The patent was applied for in 1943 and granted in 1945.  Also attached below is a copy of the patent drawing.  http://www.google.com/patents/US2370308

The tool isn't dated, but I've seen references to it being manufactured in the 1950's(?).  If true that would make it around 60's.  Not bad.   It is a solid piece of tooling. It is heavy and feels more than adequate for most any job.  The action is smooth and almost feels like it is gliding from open to closed and back.   I have not had an opportunity to check out the "locking" functionality, but will do so soon and take pictures.

They really seemed to over build tools of this era.  I like the lock feature on these pliers, sure could use that feature from time to time.

Just found a set of these for myself last week. It is indeed a solid tool, with plenty of thick steel in all the critical areas. :salute:

My first impressions of the double-pivot design:
Good --- the pliers operate with an approximate two-to-one mechanical advantage, meaning a person can exert a great deal of clamping force on smaller objects. :tu:

Not so good: --- it operates on a two-to-one mechanical advantage, meaning the handles get impossibly far apart when trying to grip larger objects. :-\
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
