Bmot's EDC thoughts, ramblings, and maybe pics, too
on: August 11, 2014, 09:12:37 PM
After carrying full-sized tools (almost) daily, for the last year or two, I've been rethinking my EDC, lately.

However, I've noticed I don't really get to using them, and I'm starting to find them more and more uncomfortable, too.

Too add to this, coming September, I'll be going back to college, and I'm not sure how much the carrying of knives there will be appreciated (probably not at all  )

So, I've been rethinking my EDC, and have started trying it out as well, and honestly, I think it's working pretty well. So, what have I been down to?

First, some time ago I got a 5.11 Rush Moab 10 sling bag, which I am going to use for school, and as an EDC bag in general. It should be big enough for the necessary books and writing utilities, plus some more. Right now, my bag holds this as well (I'm probably forgetting something too)
-A Skinth with:
 - LM Wave
 - One LM bit-card
 - Eagletac D25C TI
 - Vic Tinker Small
- A deck of playing cards
- A pouch-like thingy with several loading-cables and things like that
- My headphones
- Writing stuff and a A4-sized paper block thing
- plastic bag

That's pretty much it, I think...

So, with carrying all that in my bag, I figured I don't need that much in my pockets anymore, so what's usually left:
- A smallish (=thin) SAK or a small folding knife (though this can go up to a Nomad or Explorer). I'm really falling in love with my new Fontenille Pataud Laguiole knife.( )
- A Veleno Designs Quantum D2 flashlight and a
- keychain MT/sak. Usually one of: LM Micra, Vic Alox Vagabond or Vic Executive.
- Maxmadco bolt action pen

That of course besides keys, wallet and phone.

So... I'll try to get some pics up some time, and if I ever have any ramblings, you'll find them here :P

Are you preparing for "What I need" or "Just in case of" ?

I think you should carry "What you need" on person, and "Just in case of" stuff in your bag.

Pretty much, this.

Like I said, what I need, a smallish knife for small cutting tasks (food prep, too), and some light tools, just because it's no problem carrying it. The D2 and keychain MT fit in the coinpocket of my jeans, the small knife/SAK in my left front pocket pretty much unseen. I really don't need a full sized anything daily.

So, the stuff in my bag might be  useful, yeah, but it's mainly a "just in case" thing.

I think a D2 and PS4 would take care of most your needs.
I guess many of us carrying bigger knives and MT's really for the pure joy of having them. :)

That's me right there, as well :P

Of course, in school/college, I don't think I could easily carry a full sized tool or knife without getting into problems :P That's why they move to the bag.
Besides that I must say, wow I enjoy that Laguiole knife...

Seems like a good selection, but as the weight of books n stuff will add up, you may want to slim down on gear even more.
Oh: we need pics of the Laguiole!  :tu:

Pics will need to wait for a moment I'm not almost asleep in bed.... :P

Besides that, I have thought about that, and, I'll find out how things will actually work for me, weight wise. I don't know how many books I will actually need each day, but, if it's truly necessary, I have an older Eastpak backpack for heavy days.

So, EDC pic of the day

So, pretty much what I discussed above, this is what was in my pockets today:
Pictured:
- Fontenille Pataud XS Laguiole knife, in olivewood.
- Sleeve for my phone (used the phone for making the pic)
- Vic Executive
- Veleno Designs Quantum D2 flashlight
- G-shock watch
- Wallet
- Maxmadco bolt action pen

Not pictured:
- keys on a clip thingy
- phone (Sony Xperia Z1 Compact)
- car key (Skoda Fabia)

That's about it :tu:

Tom,I think you need a KST,or maybe a MP425 to complement the Laguiole. Gives you a full battery of tools, plus they're blade free.
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I actually have a file ready to go into my MP400.

Still, I'm not going to be (pocket- or belt) carrying a full-sized MT, no belt carry as, well, I just better don't :P and no pocket carry as I found I don't really like it without a -good- pocket clip.

I will have a full-sized MT in my bag, though, which will be pretty much always with me. I'm not too scared about having blades on that one as it's quite hidden.

I can't stand my pockets being full.
I got minor OCD about loosing things. Always padding my self down to make sure every things where it needs to be.

I carry a 91mm SAK in my right pocket, keys (three keys) with a 58mm in my left.
A wallet gets my rear left pocket and the right rear pocket is normally empty. On grocery trips the rear right pocket gets a notepad, or even rarer my non serviced phone which acts like my travelling camera.

Other than that I couldn't carry more in my pockets and always have my small sling bag near or in my car. I've learned tool and object clutter can be more of a burden at times.

I guess your still learning what's your ideal minimalist EDC...

I don't carry much more than this, at the moment, a thin SAK, or a small folding knife, and a 58/74 mm SAK or a keychain MT in my watchpocket, with the small torch. My keys are attached to a clip, screwed together, not on a ring, so they're rattle-free. Actually, my phone seems to be the only addition I have to your carry. :tu:

But, yes, I'm still experimenting. Got the feeling my carry is stabalizing, though.

Exactly. I carried one because I liked it, having something to fiddle with and stuff :P but I'm getting over that, and now I'm carrying a bag anyway, it's not that useful to carry it on my person.
