Supertool 300????
on: August 14, 2014, 07:49:02 AM
I currently own a Wingman, Skeletool cx, and wave.

I carry the Skeletool CX on a daily basis. If I'm being honest, I'm not a big fan of the Wave I have. It's gritty and hard to open. I think there are issues and I may send it to Leatherman.

Anyway, I'm debating whether to get the Supertool. Primarily, I like the longer bits and good pliers. I don't care so much about the outside blade.

How different is the Supertool vs the Wave?

I've been told the Supertool is a more heavy duty tool, is that true?

I want to make sure I buy a product that isn't similar to what I already have.

Thoughts on the differences between Supertool 300 and Wave??

The main difference, is that it is more heavy duty and has no outside/onehand opening tools. The tools should remain cleaner. It also looks utilitarian.

The tool selection is also a bit different, so it depends on whether you need e.g. scissors, replaceable cutters etc.

The Supertool 300 is substantially larger than the Wave. It also has all it's tools located on the inside of the handles.

Have you looked at the Victorinox Swisstool and Swisstool Spirit? Worth a look.  :tu:

or maybe get a Surge, which is a supersized/heavier duty Wave.

The Supertool is a big step-up in weight and capability from your CX and a big step-up in capability only from your Wave but lacking the Wave's scissors.

Have you considered the Rebar?  There is a great value retail pack around offering Rebar and Micra together.  The Rebar would give you great utility at less weight than the Wave and the Micra would give you exceptional scissors.

The Surge is basically just like the Wave, but larger and a slightly different tool selection. He mentioned he wanted something unlike the tools he already owns.

I assume the wave of the OP is problematic, so maybe getting a decent/fixed one (not gritty) may change his mind.

I do not like the Wave much, but some members seem to love it.

Well the finish will be about the same. Blade sharpness will be about the same. The ST300 will be thicker and just larger in every way. Smoothness is very hard to say. Most Leathermans come tight and gritty from the factory and break in after use, but it's not always consistent so its impossible to say.

How old is your Wave? Maybe it just needs some break in use.

DKS posted a picture comparing them for you.

Wave is a year old. How close is the Rebar to a Wave?

Imagine the Rebar as a shrunk down ST300. The Rebar is smaller and more compact than the Wave. The Rebar is a excellent tool and well loved by the Multitool community.

For various reasons which I mention from time to time I'm not a Wave fan, but... in the hand it "feels" great.  A combination of rounded corners and "weight".   If you like the Wave "feel" you might find Rebar/ST300 slightly utilitarian.  A truck rather than a limo.

If you value "feel" maybe address the Wave issues which will probably reduce with use or cleaning.  Alternatively consider the Swisstool Spirit suggestion made earlier, but you might want to consider my recent experience here...

http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,9743.msg931526.html#msg931526

If that is not an issue for you, or you get lucky, the Spirit would give you something different with great "feel" and all outside tools rather than the Wave selection of outside tools.

Maybe.  The continual Wave advocacy wore me down and I had a Wave for a week.  Then I thought better of it.

I'd settle for examples as good as Nutfancy's.

I think if you enjoy EDC Skeletool, you would find difficult to switch to ST300, it is a mega beast, it would end up being a car tool for you, which isn't a bad thing.

You don't want a ST300. It's the size of a city bus and will weigh down your pants. Get a Rebar and be happy.

Agree, Rebar is a mini-ST, lacking only a large flathead driver, much easier to carry.

I carry a ST300 daily. Have never tried the Wave so I am unable to make a comparison. I have had every model of super tool and have used them for many things. They have never let me down. The ST300 addressed every concern I had about the previous ST models. I love it. I'm not bothered in the least by it's size or weight. It does what I ask it to do. I prefer it over all other multitools. My opinion for whatever it's worth.

I'm with Sawman, i carry a rebar everyday and i love it.  Very compact, tons of tools, and sturdy as hell.

the Supertool . . . Supertool . . . Supertool . . . Supertool 300

I have incredibly refined powers of deduction, and sense that you want a Supertool 300.  Therefore, you should get a Supertool 300.

The ST 300 is the only Leatherman I have. This is really a great house/yard tool but for me, it miss a Robertson bit BADLY!!! and I tend to not carry it often because of that. I find the flatheads redundant and would love if they made it with an interchangeable bit driver instead(for the Robertson). Like the ones on the wave or surge, but inside an ''old school frame'' like the ST300. A pocket clip would be a nice addition also( yes I carry this beast in my right pocket at home!).

But if your not a Canadian like me, you should love the ST 300, really  ;)
