Reaping what I sow
on: August 18, 2014, 11:09:44 PM
So I like gadgets, not just any junk but quality ones. I guess you can figured that part by the fact I'm here on this forum for the past few years. Giving gadget gifts is always a problem, I refuse to give junk ones but not everyone appreciate a quality one.

Last year my girlfriend came across Victorinox display in store and wanted one, so I gave her a keychain model for Christmas. A real one, not a cheapo version even she wouldn't know the brand either way. Later on she mentioned needing a flashlight but didn't have one, so I gave her one for valentine. Not a cheap $2 showerhead LED she was looking at, but a quality stainless keychain light.

Well that opened the door, she's been interested in my collection that's lying around, wanting to see the rest of them, and even tried to sneak off with one (mostly a joke, but if I didn't stop her she would've).

Now her birthday is coming up, and she wants a leatherman. Well she really asked for one of those pliers tools, but after playing with some of my collection she wouldn't take Gerber, only has her eyes set on most likely a juice.

I wonder if she'd notice if I substitute a walmart special.  :D

She's also interested in the folder I have clipped, but that's off limit since I no longer trust inexperienced people, they always end up cutting themselves if I give them a sharp knife.

Get her one of these, and you'll be getting  :twak:

Think you'll need to get her the genuine item.

Teach her the knife basics. Or would you rather she learnt from someone else? Cuts are part of it.

^^ I agree with the good Doctor on this one. Just like riding a bike - you haven't learned it properly, until you've fallen over. Once that has happened, you'll have the proper respect for what you're doing and pay proper attention. 99% of the times I've cut myself on my own blades, it's because I wasn't paying enough attention to what I was doing or thought "bah, that blade ain't that sharp".

Maybe give her something "safe", with a blunt tip, and a strong backspring, making OHO (and one-hand closing) impossible? When you use both hands to close a blade with a strong spring, you'll usually make sure to keep your fingers out of the way.

Haha, yeah I will get the real deal.

As for knife, I've tried to teach her some basic safety rules, but good luck get a girl to sit there and take safety lecture seriously.  ::)

This is interesting, hope she grow to appreciate the tool as much as the value.

I further hope she will look upon this as a hobby, and not putting a limit on your purchases in the future.  I am glad my wife only yells at me for staying on MT.O too long or taking too much time browsing, and don't have too much of an idea how much I actually spend on everything.  :D

But they are all colorful and pretty and stuff.  :P

She actually likes the wingman I have in the drawer as well, certainly would be more functional and not as large as a full size.

+1 on this, I also think the Wingman would be a good choice

So, after trying and failing to open the screwdrivers on my juice (I'm pretty sure the hard to open is universal on all juices, no?), she has decided against it. She really likes the skeletool CX, but too few tools.

Now she wants wingman, wouldn't take a new one, she wants mine because it's modded with abrasive/nail file and such. Damn, it's actually my most used MT. Oh well, at least I have a couple others MT to use.

Nothing special to see really, mostly I moved the washers around and glued a strip of mylar backed sanding belt to cover the poor excuse of a ruler.

Actually i have an old pic on photobucket.

That's a good mod, and a good gift too.  Hope she understand the thoughtfulness of this and do appreciate it.  :tu:

Hey,

I am probably misreading this - and missing the humour/tongue in cheek messages - Sorry if that is the case  ??? :(  ;)
But aren't you being a bit patronising towords your girlfriend?...

Why would you not want to get her a multitool?
Why would she be incapable of using a sharp knife?
Why would you not want to get her only the best quality item?
Why would she not appreciate the best quality items? - Alhthough she seem to like LM - So it seems she does!!
Why would you not let her steal/borrow one of your tools? (I assume this could be they are NIB collectables)
- I would love it if my significant borrowed one of my tools!! And she does sometimes!
Why would she not take a safety lecture seriously?
- And does it really need to be a 'lecture'? - As opposed to a collaborative chat!

Anyway it seems like Wingman would be good - And she has purloined yours anyway - Justice will out!! :)  :D
And that is a nice mod too.

I do not have a Juice - although I wish I did - and they do look very attractive - although I preferred the all over colour of the last generation!!

Haha, nah its just a joke that now I started her on quality tools, I have to keep buying her more.

As for sharp knife, it's just my experience that most people are only familiar with dull knives, and the way they use them scares me. Been many instances people cut themselves with my knife.

I get on to my wife whenever she uses a knife in the kitchen. Once, years ago, she cut herself so badly while attempting to slice some cheese that she needed stitches. Yes sir, I get scared whenever I know there's a knife in her hand!

Hey,
Thanks for responding so positively and not taking offense  :D
Well it's great that there is yet another MT fan out there.
Just a shame, as you say, that you are funding two of them!!

And that is a good point about most people being used to dul knives - Even in people's kitchens - I bet many never sharpen their knives
