Suggestions for another Leatherman
on: August 22, 2014, 01:34:46 AM
Thanks to all you great enablers on this forum, my Leatherman collection has grown the past couple weeks...

Now I want your suggestions for what multitool to get next.

I currently have a Wave, Wingman, Skeletool Cx, Rebar, and Super 300.

I'm not brand partial, just like quality.

Don't really need a certain size or specific function. Looking to add to my tools.

I've been mulling over a Surge...

What Multitool should I get next?

Also the PST and PST2

Gerber MP600 ProScout or a SOG Powerlock

You mentioned you are not brand specific and want quality. I think it's time to add a SAK to your collection. Either a Alox/Cellidor or a Victorinox Multitool.  :tu:

Why was that?
It is not leatherman.

I could not resist, bought one, hated it, returned it in less than 24 hrs.
Fit and finish is first class near perfection, but the design is
Nothing against Blacktip, just to SOG's power assist system.

Overly complex mechanisms!

Okay. So no problem with the large pliers though right?

Try the oht, I got mine a couple weeks ago and it's great. Love sliding pliers, and they're spring loaded

If you are wanting to add capability then the Surge at 12.5oz certainly does that.  If you want to build a Leatherman collection then you should definitely get a PST.

Also there is less pressing need to get a current product than a retired product.   I agree with other suggestions to add something from the Blast/Fuse/Kick (or Zytel insert) retired range.  To kill two birds with one stone there is still retail availability if you look for it of Blast/Fuse/Kick.  In particular there is a great value Kick combo pack including a Micra and Crater knife.

What you need is a Fuse. Locking implements, comfortable Zytel grip and great pliers. I think the orange ones can still be had for around $50 USD.

The OHT looks awesome, love spring pliars, but I've seen sketchy reviews. I also have been looking at the Gerber and Sog stuff but those have really sketchy reviews.

Get yourself an MP400 or 600 and you'll be fine.  They both have an excellent reputation here.  As for LM's, you can't go wrong with a PST2  :tu:

Hah,oht is tough, big and ugly. Abused it good last night at work. I had to shorten some screws fast, they were 10/32 stainless steel machine screws. I had to stomp the oht but it snapped them with no damage to the tool. It's officially replacing the swiss tool BO. The way they designed the plier head I'm pretty sure it's the strongest multitool available.  Don't waste your time with gerber or sog. Get an oht if you want a tool to work with, leave everything else in the drawer. IMO leatherman is doing the right thing with the tool. They perfected the sliding plier mechanism

Well, i bought a MP 600 to check that myself - and no, it can´t compete to the OHT, in no way other than beeing cheaper.

It´s not bad, it´s just not that good.
Have fun.

Bye,
Michael

I´m playing with a Swisstool x at the moment. It´s different from leathermans but the quality, fit and finish is amazing.
And I can really say it´s worth to try one out.
But I´m starting to get used to replaceable wire cutters now which it doesn´t have.

What are your thoughts on the Surge vs. the OHT?  They are both heavy duty tools. thoughts?

OHT has sliding pliers and short tools, Surge is for getting things DONE.

Is the charge TTI worth a look if I already have a Wave?

Only if you fancy the S30V blade and Ti scale.
I am never a fan of the feel and look of Ti scale.
So I upgrade my wave to s30v.

If you don't like wave I don't see why you would like charge

I can't think of a current Leatherman model I'd recommend beyond what you already have

I'd certainly recommend checking out the Swisstool X and Spirit X from Victorinox though, as well as the MP400/600 from Gerber (I quite the Balance as an urban pocket tool too  ;)) I'd also seriously recommend trying a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife of some description. Personally I'm not going to recomend SOG as beyond the pliers I think they're a poor choice of multitool as the tools are outperformed by nearly everything else IMO
