How useful are wood saws, really?
on: September 01, 2014, 01:12:28 AM
Lots of SAKs and folding-pliers-style multitools come with a wood saw. I have never in my travels encountered a branch small enough to be cut with a three inch saw that I couldn't just snap in half with a good kick. And yet, people seem to love these things. What am I missing?

It can make a very nice, fine cut that looks much better and is easier to control than a kick.

To have a clean cut? For instance when making a walking stick or something. If you snap a tree or bend it, it will often break lengthwise too.

And don't think of it as only a woods tool. For that I carry a folding saw (I've taken down an at least 10in tree with my Laplander).

More often it's used to cut a board, or some similar task.

Don't kick it till you've tried it.

It can be faster and safer than a knife and cut things like pvc pipe or frozen food.

I've used it on flexible 'green' wood, buried tree  roots (that crossed a hole I've been digging) and plasterboard ! none of which could have been done with a firm boot

I've successfully and cleanly cut many 3 inch diameter branches with that 3 inch saw, and it doesn't take long at all. I can't see you being able to safely kick a 3 inch diameter branch in half or snap it over your knee. Also as mentioned, it's also good for cutting plaster board & PVC pipe. I haven't tried it on frozen food though...

Real life example:

If you look in the Outdoor Edge forum, you will see that I recently bought a chipper.  If the branch going into the chipper has a sharp bend, it can wedge out a slot that the feed roller moves in.  It's easily fixed by opening the SAK saw, cutting the branch stump off flush with slot and then push the stump back into the chipper with a stout branch.

Anything but a short saw will never fit in there, but the SAK saw (and Leatherman saw) are perfect. :)

I have cut many 2x4's with the wood saw on SAKs and MTs. I also have cut branches while fishing that where hanging down in my way and are 6-7 feet off the ground.

I've used them on wood, pvc, pex tubing, lexan, bone, raw hide, frozen rope....

And the spines have a good, sharp grind to them, so as scrapers and striking ferro rods they rock

I usually use my SAK saws for pruning shrubbry.

I love to use my huntsman with my fishing gear where the saw is excellent for scaling fish and the scizzors are great for cutting line.

I have used my saw in home improvement projects where I had to take off a bit of 2x4 from a stud.

I trim branches with them, and up 5 meters on a ladder, kicking or knee bending is not an option I care to use.

I used my Rebar's saw last Christmas to thin out our Christmas tree in the woods.  Using my bow saw for that would have been overkill.  The Rebar's saw fit the bill perfectly.  Granted, I haven't used it since, I was still glad to have it.
