:P :)

I ride an Expedition bicycle and they still mostly use 26inch wheels for strength:)

Nowhere near as quick as a decent set of 700's but pretty bombproof:)

I prefer 26inch as cheap for inner tubes and tyres plus strong, mtb's have had 26inch since the first klunkers and can't see any huge advantage just another fad as far as I'm concerned, but hey Istill prefer older type hheadsets  :D

Not sure this qualifies as bike 'porn', but it is at least a bike. ;)  A friend was kind enough to lend this to me on a very long term basis so as I can go riding with my daughter (who has gotten too fast for me to jog alongside any more).  Used and quite uncared for, it does at least go and stop. :D

TBH, if I was spending any money that's exactly what I'd have gone for.  However, for the money I can't complain about this old horse. ;)

Finally got a new bike. I had been riding the same Mongoose XR200 from Walmart for 10 years. It was time.

2015 Trek Marlin 5. I took it out on its maiden voyage the other day on one of my regular local trails along the Great Falls of the Missouri River. The weather was perfect and so was my ride. Since the picture, I have added a Bontrager seat pack to carry, well what else, a multitool. Duh :D

The next 10 years are going to be fun!

Thank you. I like to have my Wingman with me when I am on a ride. Although in the past I have carried my Skeletool or Octane. Looking to get a good bike tool soon, something with a chain breaker, spoke wrench, and the necessary assortment of hex keys. Topeak Mini-20 Pro is my current leading contender.

Went for a short 8 mile ride on the Orbea y'day. I haven't been out in over a year, felt pretty good. Trying to make it a once a week thing for a while.

I have an itching to go from a road bike over to a cyclocross bike. I just can't get a comfortable angle on my road bike. I have adjusted the seat numerous times and no luck. I have had cyclocross bikes in the past and I found them more comfortable due to the geometry. Has anyone here bought a bike and just not click with it?

I have had cyclocross bikes in the past and I found them more comfortable due to the geometry. Has anyone here bought a bike and just not click with it?

Most road bikes have shorter top tubes and steeper head tube angles to give them a shorter wheelbase and make them turn sharper and more quickly. It's not uncommon to see bikes that are more race oriented with head tube angles of up to 74.5 degrees. I personally am most comfortable with a head tube in the 72 - 73 degree range.

A cross bike will have a longer top tube and shallower head angle (rarely more than 72.5 degrees). This gives a longer wheelbase and a much more stable (and comfy IMHO) ride than a traditional road bike, even ones billed as "sport-touring" bikes. My commuter is a Soma Double Cross, a cyclocross bike, and I absolutely love it. In 30 years of cycling it's one of the most comfortable bikes I've ever owned. You can get a complete one at an LBS that carries Soma for about $1600, but only the disc brake model is available as a complete bike. The Surly Cross-Check and Straggler are well regarded cross bikes as well. The Cross Check has canti/linear brake mounts, while the Straggler has discs. I didn't like the feel compared to the Soma; I felt more comfortable on the Soma and also like the frame was more responsive (lively) and absorbed more road shock than the Surly's did. I think a big part of this is that the Surly's are made of plain 4130 double butted cro-mo while the Soma is made out of triple butted Prestige.

That said, yes, a cross bike is going to be a more versatile bike for you, able to handle both commuting and light touring or randonneuring with ease. It won't be as comfy over a long haul like a true long distance touring bike, nor will it jump forward when you stand on the pedals like a more performance oriented bike would, but depending on what you want to use it for, a cross bike is a great choice.

New commuting panniers
Reply #508 on: September 11, 2014, 01:56:44 AM
Hey guys...

I got a new set of panniers yesterday, Vaude Aqua Front Panniers. Only used them today, but so far they're working out very well. They replaced the 10 year old Ortlieb Backroller classics I had. No pics of them now; maybe later I'll be able to take and post a few.
