Just bought the first bike I've owned in about 25 years. It's going to be quite a while before I build up any fitness with it, having adopted too sedantry a lifestyle over the last few years - part/most of the reason for deciding to get one actually. Doesn't help that some of the hills round here are real stinkers and I'm a long term smoker  :P As this may all end in me having a tantrum, throwing it in a hedge (after I've finished coughing up a lung or two), and walking back with a ciggy on the go  :P I've not spent a lot on it. I really don't know if I'll take to this whole cycling lark, but I have decided that I need to say I tried, and I think I got a fair deal for a starter bike (BTW big thanks to Zed for tolerating me plaguing him with questions  :salute: :D)

I decided to go for a hybrid as I'll be on a fair mix of tarmac and unpaved roads/paths if I get into it. Only got it tonight, so haven't riden it yet ... although it is a bit tempting to go out while it's dark, as fewer people will see me wobbling uncontrollably and plunging head first into hedges  .... it's been a LONG time since I rode a bike  ;) So, maiden voyage will be tomorrow, and if the weather is half decent, I might get a piccy of it too. Till then, here's a stock image ...

Hey JA
What's it like on hard surfaces??
I really fancy a fat bike, but everyone tells me they're no good for commuting on paths or roads. How much extra legwork/lungwork  do they require.

BTW that's a stunning  looking bike, I'm insanely jealous.

Congratulations Al,  :drink:
The first few outings I swear you'll feel like smurf, but stick at it. :tu:

I got a single speed and I don't think it pedals to hard on the road.

I would buy a different bike if i planed on a lot of road riding

That's a bad@@s bicycle.

I've been riding for 30 years and my wife appreciates the fact that I try to stay physically fit.She did get a little peeved last week when I was supposed to be dressing for our ride and I took time to play with some new toys.LOL

That's from 30 years of running, biking and pumping a little iron.

My wife took that picture when I was taking too much time changing from my running clothes into my biking gear. She walked into my sports room and asked what I was doing and my natural response was "nothing dear".Her reply was turn around and don't put anything down.My response was "honey I'm heating up some coffee and while I wait I thought I would make sure my new tools were properly oiled".LOL.

She really is a sweetheart and she just laughed at my response.

Thanks mate  I took it for a little test ride earlier to try and get the set up right, then later took it for a spin to the boatyard, which is a couple of miles away but downhill for much of the the route :P My mate there who has a fair bit of experience cycling said it was a decent bike, but that I hadn't got it set quite right, and we did a bit more tweaking which has made a noticable difference. Coming back, I cycled when comfortable to do so, and when I got uncomfortable I unashamedly got off and walked. I'm being totally honest with myself that it's going to take a while to get some "basic" fitness back, and am not going to ruin it all through getting an injury or losing interest due to stubborn stupidity on my part

I'll happily walk ten miles plus with a pack on my back, but will cough my guts up and be completely purple faced if I try to run even a very short distance. It's going to take some time for the body to "adjust" to the cardiovascular aspects of cycling, and if that means there's some walking and pushing to be done to start off with, I'm perfectly fine with that  :D

Exactly right mate! There's no point pushing yourself to the point where you throw the towel in and end up banishing the bicycle to the shed of no return is there? :)

Precisely  :D

The biggest frustration right now however, is limited daylight hours. New toy, and all  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh because it's too dark to go out to play on  :P :D :D

Lights Al, lights!!
Have you seen the latest generation of bike lights....Oh my god!! they are amazing. Like a true Yorkshireman I've scrimped and just bought a used light off eBay 1000lumens!!  :ahhh
Can't wait.
The ones I'm using at the minute are slightly better than the Vic cyberlite!!
Can't wait for it to arrive.

As for getting off and walking.....it was 12-15yrs since I last rode, I just took my time, used the gears and kept peddling after a few days my body seemed to remember and I found my second wind. But the first few outings left me in a right state. But now I love it. Download that app "Map my ride". :tu:

I've got a couple of lights that are good enough for being seen by other road users, but not got anything to see my way by yet - work in progress that one ;)

The local park isn't too far away actually, so once I get a better front light, I can get to the park via side streets and get some practice in. It's a reasonable sized park (about 1.5 miles using perimeter paths), and there are some challenging climbs, so it will be a good place to get the hang of the bike and get the body used to it too.

No apps for me though - I don't get the type of phones that use that stuff  :D

The top cap is easily my favorite part of the bike, and the Trek is probably the all around prettiest bike I've ever had the pleasure of working on. It was built in 78, and could only be bought as a frameset and then had to be speced out by the buyer. Unfortunately it was much too small and much too dainty for the likes of me

Thanks man, she's been one of the best bikes I've owned. Pushed it way past it's intended use and never once gave me a problem! Voodoo made some pretty cool frames, the paint on it is a really sharp metallic yellow that the picture doesn't really help.
