Mini meths stove
on: September 01, 2014, 10:23:08 PM
Looking to slim down my cooking gear for lightweight camping trips as my gas stove (Primus ETA) and the 1 pint pot I use is a bit bulky.  Found these tiny little meths stoves online:

Doesn't look that small, does it?

Here it is under a 450ml Ti mug:

Weighs 8g and boils 1/2 a pint of water in about 6 minutes on 10ml of meths. :tu:  Need to make a windshield and lid/pot cosy for the mug then my brew kit will all fit into the mug.

Awesome little setup.  :tu:

Just a heads up. In the USA "meth" is a drug reference.

:D I probably wouldn't be bothered with a cup of tea if it was a meth stove.

What do you call it (methylated spirit) in the US?

Denatured alcohol, I don't think they add the poison to it in the US either

Denatured alcohol is the usual term for it here, I believe.  I sell lots of it at work as a solvent for different applications, including after Hurricane Sandy for stoves and the like.

EDIT:  Smashie beat me to it.  They do add poison to it here BTW.

These are pretty easy to make.

Soft drink cans make the lightest ones but they can be a little fragile for the sake of a few grams.
Aluminium aerosol deodorant cans or Red Bull bottles are good raw material for more robust stoves.

I've tried making the beer can stoves before and they're ok but I didn't have much luck with them.  This one is lovingly hand crafted in Wales by a bloke in a barn: http://www.bearbonesbikepacking.co.uk/pages/contact.html

The use of alcohol as fuel has been a new interest for me, since it's quite light weight and after reading/seeing Andrew Skurka's book and video, I am more convinced that this is a great solutoin for most hiking/camping scenario imaginable.

Wow. Some of the stuff on that Japanese guy's YouTube channel is bonkers. The nice thing about the stove I've got is that you don't need a separate pan support, though to will need a windshield. I used a Trangia and Mini-Trangia for years but they weigh far too much and take up too much space so switched to micro gas stoves. They're expensive and seem wasteful, especially when cold so I'm going back to meths.
