Scissors on MT, what for?
on: September 15, 2014, 10:36:16 PM
In the continuation of What's AWL the fuss about? & How useful are wood saws, really?, I like to ask everyone's opinion on scissors.

I personally found very little use for scissors on MT, most the tasks can be done by a sharp knife.
Some precise paper cutting task require scissors, but most of they can wait until later.
Sure I can not and WILL NOT trim nose hair with a knife, but that is what pliers are for.  :o
Also all Leatherman's wire cutters are so precise I been using them as scissors in some case with great success. (Cutting strings, opening snack packs, trimming nail etc..)

Of course, it is nice to have the options.

When given the choice, I'd rather use scissors instead of a blade, just my preference.

Blades are fine for cutting when the item being cut can be secured, example meat on a cutting board, folded over paracord, or when the item being cut is against something.

I find that with scissors I can hold the item being cut in one hand without supporting it and cut away, example paper  (when cutting shapes), ends of paracord ( when I've made lanyards ), I find that with a scissors I dont need to secure whats being cut against something or on something.

I hope that makes sense.

I use the scissors a lot for cutting band aids to size for my son, seems like I do it all the time. Must have MT and first aid kit all the time with this kid.

I always carry at least one tool with scissors, even modded some tools to add scissors.  I agree that the blade can take care of most tasks I use scissors for, but this is one tool that I like to have 'the right tool for the job'.

I've got toddlers so scissors are a bit safer when curious little hands try to "help" ;)  And if I know I'm around "non-knife people", I try to use scissors over the blade as much as possible.

So while I could probably survive without scissors, I'd rather have them than not  :D  I haven't tried using the wire cutters for some of these jobs though, definitely going to try that.

I have little kids, when we dine out, they often given kids little cup with normal length straw, i have the pet fear of them got poke in eye by the long straw.
So I would cut the straw down to proper length for them. That is my biggest use of scissors, then I realized wire cutter can do the job just as well.

Yes, I trim my nails with it too, when i have no other choice. It works, not great of course.

I haven't find anything that can fit in those jaws and could not be cut yet.

Have you tested 550 cord in them? I am genuinely interested to see if Leathermans wire cutters will handle 550 cord.  :tu:

For my fingernails, hangnails, trimming my facial (and ear) hair, loose threads, heat shrink, zip ties that are holding something- all the stuff where a knife wouldn't be the best tool.

But they mostly go on MTs for people who won't carry a SAK to go with it.

Scissors are one of my favourite tools on MTs/SAKs. I do plenty of light cutting tasks, and I find scissors are often enough better than knives for light cutting tasks that require precision or being cut in place that I want to have them. Like on or around wires, for electronics. So for me they're right up there with files and saws. I really prefer my MT to have them, so I pretty much decided not to buy MTs without scissors.

Unfortunately, I also ran into this cunning and sly-tongued group of enablers and tempters. They convinced me that it's not really impractical to carry a keychain sized scissor based MT... although of course it's best to try out several types, and the easiest way to make sure you can REALLY give them due consideration is probably to buy them, right?

They're clearly the wrong sort of crowd, so you all should probably watch out ;).

Somehow the Rebar has taken over my EDC (and yeah those cutters are sure something) so for scissors I have a Crosscut on my keychain and a SAK in my pocket. Mostly I use the scissors on the SAK.

Scissors are my most used tool not that i could not use other tools for the tasks i do with scissors. I guess what i am saying is i just like scissors. The funny thing is right now i am liking my Rebar a lot it will be sporting SAK scissors shortly.

I use the scissors in my multitool for a countless number of jobs.

It's lots safer than a razor sharp blade for many tasks.

My favorite tool on the new surge I've been carrying is the scissors.   :multi:

Big scissors fan here.

Nails, rogue hairs, plasters (bandaids), gardening chores including light pruning cuts, harvesting, twine, landscaping fabric, rogue threads on clothing, plastic tags on new store bought items, food packaging, trimming address labels for small boxes, cutting thin shims, small dia stranded wire ...

I use them far more often than screwdrivers

Scissors are of little use to me personally. I would much rather have a saw, file, awl, or can opener in place of scissors. I actually have a Fuse I want to mod to replace the scissors with a more useful tool.

I do know scissors are important to some folks though.
