The real danger of kayaking...
on: September 20, 2014, 11:41:16 PM
A man a few minutes from where I live was mauled by a beaver. I guess drowning isn't the real danger of kayaking

I fish for trout and salmon in that creek and whitewater kayak too. I guess I have to look out for the beavers I occasionally see!

Has Def ever been attacked by a beaver, or does the pink kayak act as beaver repellent?

Beavers are in all the news lately following a number of attacks this year.  I attribute this largely to "new" kayakers and outdoors people.  Beavers are very dangerous animals, but are largely nocturnal.  If people are encountering them during the day, it's probably because they have been disturbed somehow.

I always give beaver dams a wide berth for just this reason.  They may not be overly aggressive, but let's face it, a 50+ pound animal with the ability to eat through a tree is not something you want to be on the bad side of.

As a kayaker I have to say this story is much more terrifying:

http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/09/03/kayakers-attacked-great-white-shark-off-plymouth/HkVyWsWwG6U4ZumAPuIBjN/story.html

Great Whites and Bull Sharks have always been fairly common around here, but studies are showing that their numbers are increasing.

Getting away from the innuendo for a sec, I have to say that's pretty scary. :o  Reminds me of that popular pic of a kayak being followed by a shark.

Search for "kayak" and "shark" on YouTube and you'll see things going badly.  Smaller sharks hang around small boats like kayaks knowing that fish will be trapped by lines and be easy pickings.  Anglers often dangle their feet in the water for stability, and have to pull in really quick when a shark takes half their fish, right of the hook, and sometimes right out of their hands.

When I was in Florida a few years ago I was amazed by all of the nice little streams and lakes I saw in Orlando.  My first thought was "what a great place to kayak!". Then remembered what was in those lakes and streams and decided I'd be better off keeping my feet dry.

Every place has its perils.  The water alone is enough to kill you quickly without the help of animals!

Megan and I did see a rather large beaver a few weeks ago in a place I have kayaked many times.  I snapped a couple of pictures room a distance and left him the hell alone.

Once I stumbled upon a beaver lodge at the edge of a canal that has been abandoned for over 100 years. There was a beaver at it who didn't look to pleased with me there so I'm glad I left the area when it was acting defensive.

Jeez, yesterday making fun of beaver attacks, then late last night heard this:(  The first fatal bear attack in NJ since 1852!  There are black bears all over the place in north Jersey, I saw one two weeks ago.  If you're hiking around here, assume that you'll encounter a bear.  These guys panicked, split up and ran, and apparently the bear got one.

Sorry to hear about this, is bear attack that common in North Jersey parks?  I was always under the impression that Bear encounters happen often in Alaska, but didn't know there are that many in Eastern US parks.  :o
