Hello from Australia - My MT "story"
on: September 22, 2014, 09:22:39 PM
Hey. Been lurking around for a while now, seem to be drawn here every time I get curious about a new MT. Love the reviews people do with the detailed pictures.

I've been carrying a multitool since I was in my early teens with a SAK... name eacapes me but something like the camper but with scissors, too.

Moved to plier based in 2010 when I bought my own house and had to start fixing or at least tinkering on stuff.

Leatherman Wave was my starting point. Kept with that for two years, until I got a good tax refund to buy fun stuff with and started researching one to keep on my utility belt at work. Ended up with a ST300... then I needed one for my car - Juice CS4.... then for EDC - Skeletool... then maybe another "do-all" - Rebar.

My premises for new purchases became weaker (i actually remember twlling myself "I need to get one hand opening for if im on a ladder holding something else" - MP600) and I have now accepted I am just collecting them!

I limit myself to $50 out of each fortnightly pay packet to my addiction... Otherwise we'd starve!

eBay is the best way to get multitools in Australia. We pay obscene rates at retail. My local camping store still wants $259 for a Charge AL.

Some stats:
Age: 28
Location: South Australia

Favorite Brand: Leatherman

Most recent aquisition: Gerber Crucial Strap Cutter

Next Purchase: Leatherman Crunch, Swisstool Spirit, Gerber MP1. Whichevers cheapest at the time.

Most used: Victorinox Swisslite on my keys, then Leatherman Skeletool CX for every day carry.

I have a youtube channel - cedricada gear reviews where I show lots of gear, a fair few MTs.

I have an instagram with the same name, too. More MT photos there.

Thanks for having me.

Welcome   It seems you look for reasons to get another multitool, then another, and another...you'll fit in just fine here ;)  Oh and don't worry - we're good at helping others find reasons to justify getting more MTs/SAKs >:D

Welcome!  I started with a pretty similar selection of LMs when I joined here, and then the crowd here turned me on to finding retired LM models, which can be found on ebay.  Not that I'm trying to lure you in that direction or anything

Also, the Camper with scissors was likely a Huntsman (saw, scissors, corkscrew).

Welcome.  Keep on buying more MTs, we need more down-under to balance the rotation of Earth ( how's that for an altruistic reason to keep on collecting ?     )

That's about US$250, for a AL model, which I consider as a 'basic' Charge model. I was too afraid to even ask how much would a TTi cost :(

BTW, Leatherman, Gerber and Victorinox multi-tools are considered as luxury goods in this country.

It's a 'broken' distribution channel...where the LM NZ disti is paying the AU disti who are paying the US disti...and every disti is greedy and after 30-40% markup, so you're tripling up on the original US disti pricing.

Many things are like this in NZ. We are just too small and too far away, so there's very few direct distribution channels for goods an services over here.
EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

Greetings and Welcome, once you get settled in here at MTo you'll soon realize there are tools that you never knew you needed.  Happy hunting on the bay of fleas, another member from down under does quite well building his collection that way.
