Stainless Steel Spyderco Aus 6
on: September 23, 2014, 02:23:57 AM
I picked up this badly worn down Spyderco Stainless Steel knife.  My plans are to make a PE blade out of it since the serrations are pretty much nonexistent.  The tip was broken off at some point and there was an effort to try to re profile the blade or resharpen but seems like they got bored.  I may leave 3 scallops and make a combo edge out of it not sure just yet.  I got it for $8 so whatever I do will be an improvement over it's current shape.

The knife feel great in hand and the weight is pretty nice as well.

That's a pretty rough looking blade. Looks like it has seen it's fair share of (ab)use.

Pics once you get it cleaned and reground please. I love seeing an old tool get a new lease on life.

That blade is... close to not being a blade. I'm sure with enough love though it can function again

I have decided to grind at 25 degree and make it a combo edge.  I'm using my Lansky and I'm not looking to make it beautiful, just useable.  Its coming out pretty good and yes there is enough steel to work with.

This is my first attempt at not only re profiling but removing serrations.  Here we gooooooooooooo.....................

I was going to dremil it first then smooth it out but I wasn't so confident on my grinding skills.  I also didn't want to remove more material than needed.  An hour in and the serrations are pretty much gone.  I also decided I'm gonna chisel grind it like Emerson's, no need to remove more metal off the back side to get a sharp edge.

This picture show the serrations sanding down pretty good.  I'm not getting all fanatical about removing the upper part of the "scallop" since it will have no effect on the cutting edge.  I also dont care since the blade is pretty well scratched and banged up.  My goal is to have usable and serviceable edge on an otherwise good knife.  I'm leaving serrations near the tang and will end up with a combo edge blade since those last few serration are in decent shape.  I also admittedly like Spyderco serrations and these did become wicked sharp.  I have the 3 stone set and while the Black holder would have been faster (70 grit ) the Red holder ( 120 grit ) is fine.

Patience with this system is whats needed so I watched the Jets and Bears while sanding away.

The next holder I have is the Green one ( 280 grit ) then Blue ( 600 grit ) then I'll strop with Green compound.

So far so good IMO and remember guys/gals $8 knife and some fun learning and I'll walk away with a useable blade.

There is a serious burr on the back side so after I knock that off I may hit the beveled side with 20 degree

I've done as much as I wanted and it came out shaving sharp, push cut sharp, and the serrations are as wicked as any Spyderco.

I wasn't picky about the upper scallops only the edge. I may down the road clean up the scratches that the previous owner put in but its a work knife so .

I'm very pleased with the Lansky kit and other than a holder and a few other stones this kit worked very well.

Total time spent was bout 4 hours which is not bad at all IMO.  I stropped the blade to a decent shine but more importantly a razor edge.  I did make it a chisel edge for ease of service and again to not have to take off to much material.  Aus 6 was not bad to work on and take a very nice edge, we'll see how long it lasts.

Thank you for looking

Thanks Capt.  It really did come out better than the pics.  Its wicked sharp and for a work knife it will be more than enough.  My arms are yet again without hair after testing this blade.

Yeah as soon as I saw this knife I was already planning how to bring some life back to it.  It was easy honestly and while it isn't going to win any blade beauty contests I'd put this knife up against most.  Its a flipping razor and while it lost some blade tip it's still got plenty life left.

The Gen II Endura was made from around 1997 to 2006. Spyderco started using the Boye dent around 2000.

She sure is a good looking knife.  I'd say your has a lot let mileage than the one I picked up.

Thanks all  :salute:.  I'm stoked to have done this and the confidence I gained is great.  This was my first ever attempt at a re profiling a blade edge.

I'll be carrying it today and over the next few weeks so I'll report back on how it's doing.
