Alox with pinned bail - anybody done one?
on: September 26, 2014, 01:40:49 PM
I have been given the opportunity to swap out a crappy scale on my new Farmer. I'm thinking of adding a cellidor type bail (I don't have an official bail but I will make one). Has anybody modded an alox model in this way?

If so, what was your experience with it?

I love the Farmer but the only improvement I can see is the addition of a bail rather than the uncomfortable split ring point.

The alox Soldiers/Wenger SI models had bails which employed a hollow rivet rather than the cellidor riveted style like you describe. I don't recall ever having seen a pinned bail on an alox model otherwise; I do quite like the bail over the keyring, so it's a worthwhile mod IMHO.

I love my SI for it's bail, but I'm only going to be using standard pin stock so the hollow rivet is out of the question. I'm sure it's possible to fit a pinned bail though.

I guess i'll find out when I try!

It should fit but will wear on the scales. Also those tools will be loose after time as it wears in. The rivet is what keeps them in place. You could use a hollow ti rivet but you would have to drill out the tools on that side as I think it's only made in1/8 inch
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I think that it should be possible, but you'll need one fixing method to fasten the tools in place, and another to hold the bail, otherwise it'll do what Steve says - relax the fit of the tools as I wears. I started thinking about threaded pins with one nut to hold the tools and another to hold the bail, but reckoned it would get to bulky.

Just had a thought. Maybe a hollow brass pin. Flare it to hold the tools, then another brass rod inside it to peen the bail to

On some of the very early alox they used a semi hollow pin .... well more acuratly the pin looks to be normal and then the peened parts are drilled a few mm each end and the bail just clips on.

I will see if I can find an example tonight

I saw hollow Brass rod at my local hardware store last week. Outside diameter was 3/16", but I am sure other sizes are available.........might also try a Hobby/model shop, or S&K as an ebay seller.
