Living with Fred ,
on: September 29, 2014, 05:39:12 PM
Well this is all Big targets fault as now given me yet another obsession  :D So i decided to carry my new Fred (field ration eating device) for a week instead of a sak,i picked up a double pack for under £3 so inexpensive for start with,so far this week ive opened a tin of tomatoes and a large tin of grapefruit, it did this with ease, today i opened a package for my daughter again no issues, ill update as the week goes along,i have also got a p51 on its way  :tu:

Freds are awesome.
I've always carried a Shelby p38, but found the Fred's larger size is handy for daily use. Probably have 5 in the kitchen, and haven't used a mechanical can opener in years. Didn't take more than a couple of those cheep yet so expensive crank openers breaking for my wife to agree Fred was the way to go.
Here in TX I found mine at Academy sports.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

Looks great!  I really want to try out the FRED, but Paul, is there a place where I could find them cheap?  I don't seem to be able to find it on ebay(even Australian ebay).   :pok:

I've been curious about a fred, but I've never seen one. I still carry the same P-38 that I got in the army thought! It opens can, deals with loose screws, is a scraper on occasion. Many uses. I love small tools!

How bad is shipping to the UK? They are like 20 cents or so here for the p-38 and maybe like 35 for the p-51

Should not be to bad. I shipped a couple parts to Bmot awhile back. The shipping will cost way more than the P-38. When I get home, I will check and see if I got a couple of extra P-38. Do you want them Zed if I have them?

From what I was told by the older gentleman at the surplus store, they used to be made out of pretty solid steel and would last a lifetime, I guess now they've gone with aluminum, or at least flimsy steel compared to the original. So I think just the newer ones aren't as study in general.

I have two Fred versions. One being the official Australian version, the other being a Coleman version. Likewise, I do not have official P-38 or P-51 openers...but I do have a P-51 copy stamped made in Canada. I also have another can opener that does not fold over but is a solid one piece. Not that convenient...and I have no clue what that is called.

A little Leatherman information.

I have a Fred from Mat which I got ages ago (can't remember what it came with ) and I think it's a cool little gizmo. It actually lives in my Maxpediion EDC Micro which serves as a bit of a "grab bag" that I reach for when friends and family shout "HELP", or when I'm planning to be out ofn town for a few days  :D

The car or the can opener lol? The only hang up would be that it is at home, which I'm not, and I can't remember if mine is a 51 or a 38.

Can opener! I know I tend to pocket carry everything, but I think the car might be pushing it a bit  :P

Don't compromise yourself mate, but I'd like to try a genuine Shelby opener (of either size) rather than the pigmetal crap we get freely available over here. My ask was semi-tongue in cheek so don't go out of your way - but if you have a spare genuine one you could send over, all I can say is I love you, and I want Kirky to have your babies

I'll PM you the next time I'm home and give you a heads up as to what I actually have. It's no bother, I never used it just grabbed it on impulse because they were sitting in a bucket on the counter. Though that "generous" offer is not necessary of course :o
