Nice combo! The next time I am at a military surplus store, I will snag a couple of those FREDs if they have them.

Someone couldn't find them on ebay or academy so I did a more generic search and here we go.
Timber Creek 3-in-1 Can Opener, AKA Chinese FRED excels at opening takeout boxes and crushing your fortune cookie. Well maybe not there stale anyway.
http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/timber-creek-3-in-1-can-opener/pid-27025?color=Silver&N=395477681&Ntt=can+opener+&Ntk=All

Enjoy.

Well its been a week and ive enjoyed testing the FRED ,ive paired it with my congress most days so i have a blade, the freds spoon is small but ok for say mashed potatoes or similar foods,i had no bottle caps to try but im sure its works,as for the tin opener it works amazingly fast with extra leverage from the spoon plus the metal material is solid and didnt bend,i would recomend having one of these if only to throw into a survival kit, :tu:

What did I miss?!? F.r.e.d. you say?

Ok, so here is my entery into this madness:

Not only is it f.r.e.d. it is a modded f.r.e.d., to be more precise, it is my moded f.r.e.d.  :D I reshaped the bottle opener so that now it actually works. I also sharpened the curved part of the bottle opener. Now it can double as a package and letter opener! I also added a small flat disc magnet to hold the can opener blade closed while it rides in my back pocket as a part of my EDC.

Ps: I am strangely fond of this weird piece of aussie military hardware! :D

I think it's probably an acquired taste  ;)  I tried carrying one (a cheapo copy) a few years ago but didn't get on with it. That said, I'm looking forward to giving it another go  :D

When I originally got my Case Scout Jr several months ago, that I'm currently using for the minimalist challenge, I really didn't get along with the can opener at all. I tried it, but gave up about 1/3 of the way round and switched to a SAK. Since the challenge started however, I've kind of "forced" myself to try it again, and now I've got the knack for it and am enjoying using it a lot more. I think once you've got familiar with using a tool for a while (as many people did with these things before multitools became really popular), you can really build a fondness for it

Looks great!  I really want to try out the FRED, but Paul, is there a place where I could find them cheap?  I don't seem to be able to find it on ebay(even Australian ebay).   :pok:

Coleman makes a cheap knock off, but don't be fooled, they still rip through cans, open bottles and ... spoon things ... with the rest of them.

Well this is all Big targets fault as now given me yet another obsession  :D So i decided to carry my new Fred (field ration eating device) for a week instead of a sak,i picked up a double pack for under £3 so inexpensive for start with,so far this week ive opened a tin of tomatoes and a large tin of grapefruit, it did this with ease, today i opened a package for my daughter again no issues, ill update as the week goes along,i have also got a p51 on its way  :tu:

My fault??  You'll get over it :MTO:
