whats your choice axe or maul?
on: September 30, 2014, 05:37:08 AM
Ever since I tried splitting wood with a 8lb maul, I have put my old single edge away. Ive always been drawn to a double edge axe

I have used both but as I don't split a lot of logs I have no preference

It is an old pic but there weren't many with the maul in them so yeah there is a couple blades in there too.  :P

Nice pic zoidie  :tu:

As to the question, depends on the job. Examples:

Heavy spliting - large Roughneck maul and wood grenade.
Lighter splitting - Roselli R850
Cross cutting - Scandinavian Forest axe / Bahco Laplander / Widlife hatchet
Kindling - Wildfile hatchet / hacking knife (or other fixed blade)
Stripping foliage from branches prior to chopping - Chris caine survival tool / Wildlife hatchet / Vaughan Mini

There are crossovers to the task, but I wouldn't use a wood grenade for kindling or a puukko for heavy splitting  :D

Wood grenade? That sounds like it'd get the job done. I'm mainly splitting pine, 15-20'' logs,  some cedar, alligator juniper and some pinion. my cheapo maul, with 'aftermarket' :D handle has been my tool for warming up the house for 3yrs. I'd like to invest in something better some day.

Wood grenades are fairly cheap and very effective. Worth keeping a smaller axe or folding saw to hand on really knotty spruce though, just to cut through some of the stringy bits  :D Most of the time though, even on large rounds, if you get the placement right to avoid the really "congested" areas it's extremely effective.

What I tended to do (don't do that much at the moment) is start off with the splitting maul on everything, and flip the maul over and switch to the wood grenade on the tougher bits. If the maul won't split it, the WG will  :tu:

Those are neat looking.
I always used an axe. If that didn't work, I would use my sledge and a couple of wedges.

At my parents we always used a sledgehammer and wedges, until we found we could hire a tractor with a log splitter for a pittance from the nearby wood.
That makes life much quicker and easier :)
