Official 30-Day Minimalist SAK Challenge!
on: October 01, 2014, 01:24:40 AM
Let the games begin!!!

So, we begin the 30 day minimalist SAK challenge.

Should you choose to accept, you agree to spend the next 30 days under-tooled and over-stressed  :ahhh

But, should you persevere (or at least fess up to being a failure ;) ), you get a shot at winning the penultimate in tool preparedness, the Swisstool Spirit!*

So, here are the rules to be eligble for the Spirit GAW (we will rely on the honor system):

1) The challenge runs from October 1st through October 30th.
2) You must participate all 30 days (i.e., you can't jump in on the 29th and be eligible for the GAW)
3) Reply to this thread with what minimalist SAK of your choice you will be participating with
4) Fess up if you have to use a more feature-packed tool than you minimalist choice
5) Must be legal in your area to win the Spirit
6) Have fun!

I will use random.org to draw a winner on October 31st.

*Spirit has a non-finished hole I started to add a thumb stud.  After breaking 3 bits, I gave up.  I will include a thumb stud so you can finish if you like, or just use as-is.  The tool's functionality is not compromised.

So since my Wenger Premier isn't due to arrive until Thursday, I will start off the challenge with my old BSA Sentry.

84mm of single blade minimalism, sure to frustrate at every loose screw encounter  :ahhh  :D

Two questions. :D

1) Dedicated tools are allowed, right? Like if I need a screwdriver or pair of pliers at home/workshop that won't be considered a failure?

2) Can I get a pass for one day some time in the next month to use a bunch of SAK saws (and only saws) to do a saw comparison test? ;)

My tool for the next month will be this Wenger Esquire. This should be pretty interesting!

I think both of those situations are fine.  Neither are really EDC type scenarios, one is a task where one would often get dedicated tools, and the other is a special test.

Besides, it wouldn't disqualify for the GAW anyway!  :tu:

I'm in! I will be carrying only a Pioneer but will switch to a Wenger SI on each Wednesday if that is acceptable.

Here is the Pioneer:

I'll have the SI dug out for EDC tomorrow and will post a pic.

Here's mine for the month, getting rid of the scissors will probably be the hardest part.

Tourist:

And the Small Tinker, which needs some work on the blades, and some scales, may replace the Tourist once it's finished.  I figure no extra tools, still 84mm, should be ok?  If the consensus is everyone sticks with the same knife all month, I can stick with the Tourist.

Since they are basically the same knife with the exception of the philips/corkscrew, I don't see a problem here.

I have to change too since my Wenger will arrive after the challenge starts.

I was just fiddling with the E01.  It is both surprisingly brighter and bluer than I remember ;)

I'm in with a Compact Plus. Not sure if my LED Lenser P2 counts for the minimalist light portion, but that and a Bic will be what I'll be carrying.

I'll try to get a pick in daylight tomorrow to update with. :tu:

Let the madness begin!

I'd love to play , but there is no way a SAK will handle my daily work requirements , sad but true .
After work and weekends wouldn't be a problem .
I will be thinking of you all , good luck  :)

Is this okay ? Going with a Tinker small. Please withhold me from the VERY gracious drawing, give the others better odds.

As is the case with the fearless founder of this challenge, mine won't be in until a couple days or so into the challenge.  I'm hoping it will be in by Friday.  Oh, and it's a black Compact, so add me to the Compact club in this challenge :tu:  Unfortunately I have no other options for carry in the meantime other than my Rogueneer as my Classic and Executive are currently in storage.  Very generous prize too gustophersmob :salute:
