Fake Spyderco thread.
on: October 01, 2014, 07:23:31 AM
I have always been weary of all the fake Spydercos and they seem to be the most faked knife in my opinion. The counterfeiters keep refining the process and are making it VERY hard to tell the difference. After reading about the fake Paramilitary II's being sold at Cabela's and the fake Dragonfly H-1's being sold by Amazon I just could not help, but check my Spyderco's to see if anything was fishy. I actually did find some interesting and not so exciting things. Some of the ways to tell if you have a fake is the box. I noticed something interesting with my Squeak boxes. They are not the same and it got me worried. I also noticed some differences between boxes on other models.

Obviously different models and boxes are made at different times and will vary a little bit, but I think a thread that compiles info on what to look for and info from confirmed fakes could help people determine if their Spyderco is legit or not.

I't is quite late right now so I will not be adding any info on fakes at the moment, but this thread will be a ongoing thing and I will add info whenever I get it to help others. I am in no way a excellent fake spotter, but like to have as much info as I can get. I would love any info from others hear to help with compiling info or commenting on others concerns.

I have my own concern with the pair of Pink Squeaks I purchased a while back from Amazon when they were running the deal on them. I know a few members bought the same ones so maybe they can chime in as well. I looked at both boxes and they are inconsistent of each other. I also noticed one of the knives looked of lesser quality, but it is late and I wan't to really look at them under some good natural light tomorrow. Until then I took some crappy pictures just to get things rolling. Any info would be appreciated.

You will notice how the Spyderco symbol is very much in different positions. I also noticed the bar code. On most (real) Spyderco's the bar code will come down and actually touch the numbers. Confirmed fakes have been known for having bar codes that do not touch the numbers. This is known for larger models. I have no idea about the smaller models though my Ladybug and Dragonfly both have boxes which "touch." The Squeaks are the only Spyderco's I have where the bar code does not touch which makes me a bit suspicious. Any info would be appreciated.

Capt, the front of the box certainly look different, especially where the spider is, but the two numbers and bar codes distances look the same to me.  The numbers are both 'non-touching' to the bar-codes.  Are you suggesting there is a chance both are not real?

Yes I am suggesting that both might be fake. I bought them both at the same time through the same dealer.

The bar codes could simply be different for the Italian made Spyderco's though. I am just wanting to see if others boxes look the same.

I hadnt heard about the bar code thing. I have a few boxs so went and had a look. This is what I found. Large Spyderco boxes bar code touches number on all except a couple these were older spydercos one of which is a numbered CC tan Endura from 2005. I doubt these were fakes. Every small Spyderco box I have the bar codes do not touch the numbers. The small boxes are boxes that Ladybugs, Manbugs, Co-Pilot and other similar sized spydercos come in. My guess is your Squeaks are proably all right if every thing else is cool about them.     :)

There is a seller on the bay who is auctioning some Military's and Police 3's. These look fake to me. I maybe wrong but there are too many red flags about them. Such as grind lines, finish, blade width, etching instead od stamping. Beware!

One rule that has helped me avoid fake spyderco s is if a deal is to good to be true it probably isn't a deal at all.

Most definitely, but people have been paying full price and even getting fakes through Cabela's and Amazon.

Buying from eBay is always a gamble in my books, but you shouldn't have to worry about it buying from Cabela's or Amazon!!

With how easy it is to buy a fake unwillingly, it really can make a person nervous!

It seems the fakes from the reputable dealers are because of people buying fakes, then buying the real thing. Then replacing the real deal with the fake and returning it to the store. The people doing the returns have no idea and it gets passed on to the next guy.
