Bahco Laplander DIY Sheath
on: October 06, 2014, 12:04:55 AM
I had a bit of free time today so I decided to try and make a sheath for my Laplander as I wanted to have it easily accessible and storable when up and about in the woods or back yard.

Only tools used were a hole puncher and shears and the whole project took about 20 minutes.

I'm happy with the result, the saw sits very snugly in it and as it's pretty deep there's no fear of loosing it. Could it have been a bit cleaner cut, yes. But I'll be carrying it in the woods and functionality is all I was after with this one. :P

On to the pics. :D

I'll probably get it wet first and form fit it a bit more. I need to buy linseed oil and stain all my DIY sheaths although they are holding up great even without it so far.

Nice one  :tu:

Wimas Bear Cream is good product for protecting leather for outdoors use if you've not tried it before

And then you complain about derailling threads...

As for the sheath, it looks great. Does what's supposed to do, no unnecessary extras. I'd sugest molding it to the saw, just to make it more secure. Soak it in warm water, wrap the saw in some plastic film, put it inside the sheath and use some wood or metal tool to press the leather against the contour of the saw. There's lots of tutorials on this.

Enki,
Do you use the linseed oil on the leather?

No, I need it for some woodworking projects and for my red brick fence. But I was trying out different options on scrap pieces this afternoon while waiting for the leather to dry.

Here's a few samples, the lightest is the raw one, black and big dark brown piece are shoe polish( the ones with the sponge applicator), and the small triangular part of the black piece is linseed oil. I soaked a cotton rag with it and gently rubbed it on, didn't soak the leather and it's already dry.

Good idea, they need to be worn somehow. One day I may make something that holds secateurs as well.

I had a very long day today so pics will have to wait till tomorrow. The sheath is dry now from wet forming.

I'll do some more tests on possible finishes tomorrow as it will be a holiday here and I'll have more time and post some pics then.

When your wet forming leather , get the basic shape and then leave it alone for 30 minutes and then work it again with more effort and precision .
It is very easy to overwork the leather and compress it . You end up with a work hardened effect that maybe isn't what your after .

Here is a pic of one I made recently , and i had done very little work to it to get it to that stage .
Sometimes less is more  :)

Here's one I purposely over worked because I want it to be quite hard so that the knife snaps into place .

And here it is outside drying after I dyed it , but still needs stitching and the edges burnished .

I'm nowhere near that skill. :D

I didn't do anything regarding the sheath today as I was busy making sauerkraut.
