I like the idea but feel the execution could be improved.

He cut the bottom of the bottle off and wasted a water gathering or carrying container. I would cut the bottle near the top side of the flat portion, slide the can in and put the cut away portion back in. Would work even better with smooth scaled bottles.

Something like this: (MS Paint magic  )

great diagram  :tu: A+ for your homework
I was thinking along those lines you suggest, BUT you'd possibly need 'tape' to seal the bottle back up ?
and as for 're-using' the bottle, I'd want to leave it as a still if it works !!!
and yeah *smooth* bottles would be best I reckon but you might not get the choice ?

* and the 'tin can' might contaminate the water ? rust dirt etc.

It doesn't matter if the can contaminates the water in the can, you're distilling it.
The advantage of cutting the bottom out of the bottle is that you don't need a clean can, and I don't thing you do loose a water carrier, you just have to use the bottle upside down.

With a bottle like that, so as long there is ample sunlight and the water is not too clouded, even the simplest sodis method may work for water treatment in real emergency situation.
