Leatherman Micra Rebuild
on: October 11, 2014, 10:05:07 PM
I've had a few old Micras for a few years now and never did anything with them.  One of these was in decent shape with the exception of some rust that has pretty well seized it in the open position with the cap lifter seemingly permanently stuck in the half open position.

How stuck is it?

Stuck enough that the eyeglass screwdriver end sliced through my thumb twice when I tried to budge it.   :ahhh

The worst part is this happened after I took the screws out.  That thing won't budge...

It's going to start with a nice bath in vinegar.  I'll take another whack at it tomorrow and report back.

Keep us updated. If the vinegar does not work soak it in WD40 for a few days. I have had that work very well for me.

50/50 mix of diesel and auto trans fluid.  one of the best penetrating oils you can make.
It stinks a bit but it really gets in...   (that's what she said).

A diesel and paraffin/kerosene mix works well too  :tu:

Thanks for the suggestions guys.  This one will be torn apart and all of the bits will be polished.  Then it will be reassembled using Uncle Def's Ultra Premium Tool Oil!  :D

50/50 of acetone and ATF also works great!

That looks like an early model Micra too, definitely worth saving, IMO!

It's date stamped 11/98 and 04/99 I think.

I'm going to let it soak for a couple of days, at least until my thumb becomes use able again.  :P

Well this has failed.  I tried to take it apart this evening and the springs broke.

I think I might have another Micra I can steal parts from but I'll have to have a look.

It didn't look corroded. In fact it looked so clean it took me a moment to realize where the missing parts went.
